Mrs. Boyer's Reading Advancement Program
It was a great first week back from our holiday break. The students worked hard taking their Levelset in Achieve 3000, which will identify their beginning Lexile level. Next week, we will begin to study The Great Depression. We are going to begin learning about Hoovervilles and comprehending pieces of text. We will focus on synonyms and antonyms, as well as homophones and homographs. Continue to check your student’s progress in Achieve 3000 by asking them to show you their “data center”.
MATH
Accelerated 7 students will work on Expanding and Facotring Alebraic Expressions before having a CFA (Quiz) on Thursday, 1/12 that covers the first half of the Expressions topic.
SOCIAL STUDIES
What a great week back from winter break! This week, students learned about the Bill of Rights. They even took on the role of a lawyer in a simulation game, where students had to decide if they had a right being violated. We will continue to use this game on icivics.org next week. Students can even log in and play the game at home for extra review! Next week, we will be working on a summative essay where students will write about three important rights and freedoms protected by the Bill of Rights.
SCIENCE
Our new unit, Populations and Resources, will help students understand why populations change size in an ecosystem. Throughout the unit students will be analyzing data to determine why a fictional population of moon jellies has had a rapid increase in population. This week we explored the different factors that can affect the size of a population in general. Next week we will look more closely at the main reason populations increase in size (reproduction).
