A Note from our School Nurse
Dear Families,
FOCUS ON HEART HEALTH
February is Heart Health Awareness Month. Heart health is key to overall health and wellbeing. Here are some ways you and your family can keep your heart healthy all year long.
Daily activity β if you donβt have time to fit regular exercise into the day, you can boost your activity in other ways:
- If you drive to school, try building extra time into the day and park a short distance from school at the beginning and end of the day to add a walk to the routine.
- When running errands, choose parking spots that naturally build in extra steps.
- Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
- Turn on some music and dance.
- Take movement breaks when watching TV or movies.
Eat heart healthy foods β
- Plan ahead for the week so you know the meals you will eat and not opt for convenience over healthy foods.
- Shop the perimeter of the grocery store when possible β foods that are not processed and packaged are the best choices. These include fruits and vegetable, meats and cheeses, whole grain breads and low-fat dairy items.
Reduce stress -
- Try to get to sleep at the same time every night to allow for good rest.
- Consider incorporating some time to talk about the day and feelings. One book that I have used to help start conversation with kids is: Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day by Judith Viorst.
