PARENT INVOLVED FOR CENTER STUDENTS
Happy Holidays Center Vikings and Families!!
Can you believe it? We have almost finished the 1st semester of the 2021-22 school year, and for the most part have had minimal interruptions. This is partly due to our mask mandate in the elementary, GREAT JOB!
Please continue to send your children with a clean mask daily. Also, if your student has any symptoms of being ill, vomiting, diarrhea, sore throat, temperature etc. please keep them home.
Here at Haskin Elementary this quarter we have focused on the difference between rude behavior, mean behavior and bullying behavior. Students learned that they all do not mean the same thing.
Rude behavior is when someone does or says something without thinking first. They make a comment about what you are wearing and they don’t like it, however the intent is NOT to hurt you. Usually once the person says or does the action you can tell by their face and a quick “I’m sorry! I didn’t mean that!”
Mean behavior is when the persons intent IS to hurt you or your feelings, or to have you feel like you do not belong/fit in or are the ‘outsider’. When someone is being mean, usually there is not an apology, and the students practiced ways to advocate for themselves, and let the person know they do not like the behavior.
Bullying behavior is when mean behavior continues after they have been informed that it is not acceptable, and the intent is still to hurt you or your feelings. The students learned that they can stand up to someone who is showing bullying behavior to someone else (being an Upstander) and how that can help encourage positive school climate. We also discussed how a trusted adult should ALWAYS be notified of this behavior, even if it is not directly to that student, and if the 1st adult does not do anything to tell another adult and another.
The students also discussed how bullying and even mean behavior can effect someone, and how we have ourselves felt when others are mean or have bullying behaviors towards us or those we care about.
Please ask your students to explain it to you. Ask them why it is so important to know the difference, and how they can be an Upstander.
Have a wonderful Winter Break! Enjoy your time with your children, they are pretty amazing!

K-5 Counselor, Haskin Elementary
Haskin Elementary Parent(s), or Guardians,
Happy Holidays to you all. Physical Education classes 3rd thru 5th have just finished basketball skills. The focus was basic skills like dribbling, passing and shooting. We try to help out with those skills as students are engaged or will be engaged in basketball outside the PE.
We are continuing to work on a PE grant that address Colorado state standards, and how can improve instruction through collaboration. We have done a lot of wellness check ins with your students, this just helps us and your students to make sure we are all ok and just communicate about everyday happing’s, and sometimes just how we are feeling day to day.
In the next couple weeks we will work on scooters, galaxy knock down (kind of like dodgeball). Please keep your kids active in some fitness and wellness. They can do parks and rec here in Center or Alamosa has a lot of other options.
Once again, we appreciate the opportunity to engage with your students and the opportunity to teach them skills of physical education. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
Respectfully,
Mr. Joe M. Garcia
