HS Newsletter - January 2022
Developing student-focused pathways for a lifetime of opportunities through
innovation, exploration, and community partnerships.
Message from the Principal
Hello CLA Families,
At the start of each year, I find myself REFLECTING on the trials and triumphs of the previous year and how they have brought me to TODAY -- the character built, wisdom gained, memories made, and even the challenges left to tackle. As I look at our students I see the same -- a lot of character-building, wisdom gained, memories made, and even challenges yet to tackle. I am honored to partner with you in supporting, encouraging, and guiding your students in the new challenges of 2023 as we work toward fulfilling Every Student Graduate +. The best is yet to come!
Happy New Year!

College & Career Day - January 5th

Senior Seminar Presentations - January 19-20
The Class of 2023 will present their Senior Projects before a panel of judges comprised of CLA staff and community members. As a graduation requirement, Seniors must complete the course, connect with a mentor, complete volunteer hours, write a research paper, and present their project to the panel. Our Seniors have worked hard and we are excited to see their presentations!
*There will be no Direct Instruction on Thursday, January 19 from 9:00-12:00.
End of 1st Semester- January 26th
Another VERY important thing to be aware of as we approach the final weeks of the 1st Semester is the students' opportunity to increase their GPAs. A student's GPA is their Grade Point Average -- the number representative of the average grades they received over the duration of high school. A student's GPA is used for college entrance, scholarship applications, and financial aid. GPA matters...and can mean more money later! So, let's push our students to earn the highest grade they are capable of and boost that GPA!
School Choice Week- January 23-26
We are excited to celebrate School Choice Week because we value and appreciate the option for families to choose a school that fits the values and needs of their children. Thank you for choosing CLA! For more information about School Choice, visit the link below.
MAPS Testing - January 30-31 & February 6-7
Winter benchmarking will directly follow the end of 1st Semester. At CLAHS, we use the data collected from these tests to show and celebrate the growth your student is showing in Math and Reading. This is not a high stakes test, but a chance for students to show what they know and see how they are growing! Please encourage your student to do their best. We will share the growth from Fall and Winter benchmarking at Spring Conferences.
We will conduct Winter MAPS testing during Advisory on the following dates:
9th and 11th Grade
- Monday, January 30 (Math)
- Monday, February 6th (Reading)
10th and 12th Grade
- Tuesday, January 31st (Math)
- Tuesday, February 7th (Reading).
This is REQUIRED for all students. For students who attend the minimum 30-minute Advisory meeting, they should prepare to be on campus on their advisory day for the duration of one test per week (approximately 1 hour). We will have a modified direct instruction schedule on these days to accommodate testing.

DISTINGUISHED GENTLEMEN
Will Young is a Community Impact Director from United Way of Jackson County and began volunteering at CLA last year. His focus is on student mental health and wellness and he supports this by highlighting the very best in CLA students! He builds others up no matter where he goes!
This year, Will is kicking off a new group at CLA called Distinguished Gentlemen. "Will is passionate about helping young men incorporate their families into the journey called life. The Distinguished Gentlemen Initiative exists to partner with parents and community leaders to get the best from our young men. We recognize as an entity; young men are faced with odds that are not insurmountable but are certainly challenging. We are hoping that these young men become ambassadors during this series."
Distinguished Gentlemen will meet at lunch on the 2nd & 4th Tuesdays of each month for the duration of the school year. Students who choose to join will participate in small group discussions ranging from "The Value of Enlightenment" to "Having Difficult Conversations."
