Weekly News and Updates - Volume 3 Issue 31 - 4/21/2023
Week in Review
Spring has sprung here on campus. There's a buzz in the air as the countdown begins for summer. But first, testing. This week our 5th graders began their FAST reading test. Our 3rd and 4th graders will take it next week. On May 4th, the State CAASPP testing will take place for all 3rd-5th graders, while our UTK-2nd graders will take their final Fountas & Pinnell assessment of the year.
TOMORROW is our SPRING CARNIVAL! It will feature games, food trucks, and bounce houses galore on the grass field. Come on down from 11AM-3PM. It's going to be EPIC.
“Education is for improving the lives of others
and for leaving your community and world
better than you found it."
– Marian Wright Edelman
OPEN HOUSE RESCHEDULED - Now May 18th
Welcome Wall Coming June 2023!
Each bird on the wall represents a street name in the Birdland community. Those on the north side of the wall are the streets north of Fletcher. Those on the south side are the streets south of the school. This work will be done by Mindful Murals. You can see samples of their work at: https://mindfulmurals.com/
Youth Cricket Pitch Proposal
This week, Principal Friedenberg and world class cricket player, Marty Kain, from the New Zealand national team proposed the installation of a synthetic turf cricket pitch at the joint use field. This will provide the entire San Diego cricketing community a place for their children to play and compete in this international sport on weekends. The rental of Fletcher Facilities for restrooms, parking lots, etc. will also generate a recurring revenue stream for the school to increase funding available to students! Check out the picture below.
Student of the Week
Our Student of the Week is Carissa in Mr. León's 5th grade class. Carissa has demonstrated continuous growth in reading comprehension, writing, and mathematics. She reads above grade level and is capable of analyzing complex vocabulary through cues in prefixes, suffixes, and context information. In addition, Carissa pays attention to class discussion and absorbs knowledge like a sponge. She is always answering the most difficult academic questions during group debates and competitions. Her table partners are lucky to have her on their team. Carissa is also a Falcon who follows school expectations and treats everyone with respect and kindness. Mr. León reports, it’s an honor to have Carissa in our class. She is our sunshine everyday! Way to go, Carissa! Thank you for being a phenomenal Falcon!
