Principal's Corner
Greetings Harvey Dunn Families,
With the snowy weather still around it is hard to believe the third quarter for the 2022-2023 school year wrapped up last week. The end of the quarter is a great time to reflect on the growth students are making socially and academically. As teachers reflect and set goals for the fourth quarter with students, it is a great time to have these conversations at home as well. There is a lot to celebrate! The 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students will be taking their end of the year state assessments throughout the month of April. Kindergarten - 5th grade students will begin taking the NWEA MAP Assessments at the end of the month and finish up in May. The information from these assessments allows us to see student growth in the areas of math and reading. It is important for students to get a good night of sleep and eat a healthy breakfast on testing days. We appreciate your positive encouragement and support at home as students put their best efforts towards these assessments.
April 11, 2023, is the last day to turn in a Parent Input Form to the school office for the 2023-2024 school year. If you believe you have information about your child that would be beneficial for our administration to know as we create balanced class rosters, you may pick up and complete the Parent Input Form from the school office. Please understand, this is not a teacher request form. It is our job as an administrative team to know our staff and to match your child's needs with a teacher while creating balanced classrooms. The information you share on the form will remain confidential.
Kindest regards,
Mrs. Chamberlain, Principal
Counselor Corner
Hello families!
As parents and caregivers, we sometimes wish there was an instruction manual or a playbook of some sort to follow. With kids, new questions and challenges present themselves so often. It seems like just as soon as we get a handle on something, they're past that phase and on to the next!
One specific challenge that arises early in childhood and continually shifts as children grow is how to handle screen time. The media and technology landscape is always changing, and it can be hard to know what boundaries to set, and how to help our kids navigate this part of the world safely.
Rules and expectations about screens, devices, and media content are unique to each individual family. But, there are some common things to consider when deciding what is right for your household. For example:
- Are there any places or times where screens or devices are off limits, such as at dinner?
- What content am I okay with my child accessing, or not okay with?
- How closely will I monitor my child's screen activity, and how will I do so?
- What might the consequences for breaking screen or media rules?
Below are some helpful Family Tech Planners for different ages provided by Common Sense Media. They can help you think through the decisions about what is okay for your family, and how to set those expectations. Reach out to Mrs. Craghead if you have questions or are curious about other resources!
PTA Fun Run
The PTA Fun Run was a success! A huge THANK YOU to family and friends for supporting Harvey Dunn Elementary through Fun Run donations! The students and staff are excited for the addition of an Outdoor Classroom coming to the school. In total, we raised $28,537!
Everybody Reads
Thank you for participating in Everybody Reads! Our galaxy has filled in with lots of stars representing books read by Harvey Dunn students. Thank you, Mrs. Boyle, for organizing this for our school. Thank you, Mrs. Black, for the creation of the rocket in our galaxy. Harvey Dunn Elementary students passed their goal of 9,400 books, reading a total of 10,814 books. It is amazing what we can do when we all work together. Keep reading!
Parking Lot Reminders - Thank you for reviewing and keeping students safe!
Students' safe arrival to and departure from school is a top priority. Please take time to review the reminders below. We are all here for the same reason, the children. When we all follow the guidelines during drop off, you help your child start their day off in a positive and safe manner, as well as the other families around you. Thank you for doing your part to make this process and procedure work.
- Park vehicles in the parking lot and walk students to and from the school using the crosswalks. If you are choosing to drop off students, use the circle drive or north drive.
- Only vehicles with handicap parking permits can park in the handicap spots.
- When pulling up in the circle drive or north drive before or after school remain in your vehicle and move forward as the line moves. This helps keep traffic moving.
- Students exit on the passenger side of the vehicle. In the circle drive, once you are in the student drop-off zone, students exit the vehicle. When more students are exiting the vehicles, we are able to move traffic through more efficiently.
- The north drive might be a faster alternative for morning drop-off when the circle drive is busy. Remain in your vehicle and move forward as the line moves. This helps keep traffic moving.
