Preparing For Winter
COLD WEATHER
With the winter weather approaching comes the question of recess for the child who might be just a bit under the weather. We have some very specific guidelines with regard to temperature, which does include the wind chill factor. We do feel that recreation, in the form of recess, is a necessary part of the school day. We also expect the children to go outdoors for recess unless weather conditions are unsuitable. If your child is well enough to attend school, the fresh air and exercise derived from recess should be beneficial. Therefore, when it is necessary for your child to remain indoors during recess, it will be necessary for you to provide the school with a doctor’s excuse.
PLEASE
It is important that the children come to school dressed appropriately for the weather. Please remind your child that they need to wear a coat in the chilly weather because we will be having outdoor recess, weather permitting. Also, when the weather becomes cold, wet, and snowy, make sure they are wearing hats, mittens, snow pants and boots. The children will not be allowed in the “snow” areas of the playground without boots or other shoes to change into when they come back into the building.
DRY SOCKS
When we have snow, slush, or rain, the children’s socks can get wet. We recommend you send an extra pair of clean socks to keep in their school bag. This may save you a trip to school and certainly is healthier for your child.
EARLY MORNING ARRIVALS
When your children walk or are driven to school, it is important that they do not arrive before 8:30 AM. Our supervision does not begin until that time. During the cold weather season, we encourage our students not to arrive much before that time.

Read To Succeed
We are excited to participate again in the Chicago Wolves Read to Succeed incentive program for the 2023-2024 season at Spring Grove Elementary. You can access and print the reading log at home by clicking this link: Chicago Wolves Read to Succeed Reading Log Printable. If you need a pre-printed copy of the log, your child can ask their classroom teacher for one or you can email Mrs. Craddock. Fill out the reading log with the books or minutes your child reads to complete his or her reading goal and return it to your child’s classroom teacher when completed. Once their log is turned in, your child will receive a certificate for a free ticket to any regular season game. The certificate includes directions on how to redeem the free ticket as well as a schedule of games. Students will receive their certificate within a few days of turning in their logs so the earlier the log is turned in, the more game options you will have to choose from. Completed reading logs should be turned in by Friday, December 15th. Logs will be accepted after this date, but please email Mrs. Craddock if you plan to turn it in after 12/15. The Chicago Wolves season has already begun and runs through April 21st.
If you have any questions, email Mrs. Craddock at pcraddock@nsd2.com.
