Thank you to the families who joined 1 of our 3 in-person open house and tour sessions, yesterday! As additional details for the upcoming school year are finalized, we will share those updates, as applicable.

DCPS Engagement Opportunity

The DC Public Schools’ Back to School Block Party is a celebration to welcome students, families, teachers, school administration, and community members to a successful start to the new school year. The Block Party is designed to engage the DC community in a fun and welcoming environment while providing information and resources. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet and gather materials from community organizations and District Government agencies, including health & wellness, food access, and college & career readiness to name a few. There will be free food and fun activities for all ages including a moon bounce, face painting, and student performances. To register, please visit http://bit.ly/dcpsblockparty2023.

Hyde-Addison Elementary School

Your child's classroom teacher will meet you outside on the playground (holding a sign) at the time listed below for each grade. This is a great time to drop off your school supplies, if you did not already order through the PTA.

Expect to spend about 10 minutes inside of your child's classroom with the teacher before the group travels outside to the playground together for popsicles and continued community building. While classroom teachers will have additional afternoon meetings that will keep them from being able to stay and play for an extended period of time, you are welcome to remain on the playground as long as you like. Remember, Back-to-School Night presentations will include a broader informational session with Q&A- this is just a Sneak Peek!

As you know, one of our High 5 priorities is working with families as our academic partners. Below are just some of the engagement opportunities you can look forward to participating in this school year!

The DCPS Early Childhood Education Division (ECED) is excited to share an enriching and enjoyable resource that can help Pre-K families feel prepared for Pre-K! This magazine includes information about the Pre-K classroom experience, key dates, helpful links, answers to commonly asked questions, and ideas for supporting Pre-K student learning over the summer as they transition to school on Thursday, August 31. The magazine is available in English, Spanish, French, Vietnamese, Korean, and Chinese. All translations are also linked here.

Please see the attached DCPS letter, introducing the new Pre-K Building Blocks math curriculum.

At DCPS schools, students may automatically qualify for free meals through 'direct certification' which means the student or family meets one of the following criteria:

• Students in households receive benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), or

• Foster children that are under the legal responsibility of a foster care agency or court, or

• Children who meet the definition of homeless, runaway, migrant status.

If your student does NOT meet the above qualifications and attends Hyde-Addison ES, then a Free And Reduced-price Meal (FARM) Application is required to qualify for free meals based on family income. If you need support filling out this application or have additional questions, please call 202-299-2159 or email food.dcps@k12.dc.gov.

We are fortunate to have many incredible partner organizations that support our students during the school day and outside of school hours. The full slate of options for this fall is not yet available however information about opportunities is updated regularly on the school website under the tab "Beyond Class" and will be shared in school newsletters, as well, in advance of when registration opens.

After Care

Champions is one of Hyde-Addison ES's partners and provides aftercare services. More information about their program can be found on the school website.

Champions registration for the fall of 2023-24 is now open! To secure a seat for your child and avoid being added to the wait list, please ensure your child is fully enrolled as soon as possible by emailing the following completed documents to: tomekia.wilburn@discoverchampions.com

Before you receive a start date, your child's file will need all of the completed documents:

2. Billing Schedule Reminder: Your bill is charged based on the schedule which is due every Wednesday of each week. The last day is Wednesday to make any changes.

TENTATIVE ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES MAY INCLUDE:

Thank you for providing school supplies to support your child’s learning during SY 2023-24, if you are able. The supply lists for SY23-24 can be found here. Click HERE to purchase a school supply kit through the PTA which will both help raise money for the school and take one item off of your to-do list!

If your family is in need of assistance purchasing school supplies for your child, please email hyde.addison@k12.dc.gov to share your child's name and the grade level they will be in so we can ensure every child has equitable access to materials.

When you receive the family newsletter by email on Fridays, as well as most other school-wide correspondence, you have the option to click and view the newsletter in a web browser. Viewing the newsletter in a web browser enables automatic translation into over 20 languages as well as provides the option for increased visibility with high-contrast settings and increased font sizes.

Family Newsletters will continue to be archived on the Hyde-Addison website (https://hydeaddisondc.org/home) throughout the year for your reference.

We encourage every family to share a little bit of information about their child so that the teachers who will greet them on the first day already know a little bit about how to support them this year. Thank you to the 65 families who have completed this, thus far! Our teachers are so excited to meet their new students.

If you would like a Kids Ride Free Card for your student, please fill out this short form. They will be sent home in students' backpacks on Mondays once the school year begins. If you need yours prior to the start of the school year, call the main office after filling out the form to schedule a pickup time this summer.

Attendance is a priority of DCPS and Hyde-Addison, as we know regular school attendance is integral to student success. Please find the DCPS calendar, linked here and shown below, so that your family can plan events and vacations accordingly.

Last school year, DCIAA allowed Hyde-Addison to compete in girls and boys track (spring season) as well as girls and boys cross country (fall season). Once DCIAA informs us of what teams Hyde-Addison will compete in SY23-24, we will share that information.

There is no cost to families for a child to be on a DCIAA team. All students who wish to compete on a DCIAA team must complete a participation packet every school year which includes a physical by a medical professional. Additionally, the medical forms must be completed within 365 days of the end of the athletic season.

2. Universal Health Certificate (UHC). Students with certain medical conditions may also need to complete an Asthma Action Plan or an Anaphylaxis Action Plan

This school year, all forms must be completed and submitted for each student in advance of trying out for a team. We encourage you to go ahead and schedule your doctor appointment to complete this over the summer if your 4th or 5th grader may be interested in playing sports.

As we prepare to launch into school year 2023-24, we would like to invite new and returning families to join us for the engagement opportunities outlined below. Together, we will share important information, ask questions, and build connections as a school community.

1. There's still time to purchase a School Supply Kit! Each kit contains (almost) all of the items on the school’s supply list for a particular grade and will be delivered directly to your child’s classroom prior to the start of the school year, saving you time and money! In turn, the proceeds will be passed onto the school to purchase other items not fully covered by the DCPS budget like curriculum materials.    Be on the lookout for information on our supply collating event the week of August 21. It’s a great way to connect with other parents and support the school.
2. Download Konstella! If you're new to Hyde or haven't already, download Konstella, a virtual platform for Hyde-Addison families. It’s a great way to connect with other families, including those in your child(ren)’s class(es) once school starts, ask for recommendations, volunteer for one time activities or on an ongoing basis, and keep up to date on events and activities happening at school! More info on Konstella is in the flyers below.
   
   If you missed the chance to sign up for a committee at the open house, you can do so via Kosntella!
3. Support While you Shop! As you stock up on new clothes and snacks for the school year, keep in mind our ongoing fundraisers with Box Tops for Education and Mabel’s Labels!
• Collecting Box Tops for Education is an easy way to support Hyde-Addison - no more clipping - and they really add up (each boxtop is worth $0.10)! First, shop for participating products, like Cheerios. Next, download the Box Tops app on your phone sign up and select Hyde-Addison as your school. Then, within 14 days of purchase, scan your grocery receipts using the app or forward any email grocery receipts containing eligible items to receipts@boxtops4education.com.
• Now you can shop at Mabel's Labels, which produces waterproof labels in a variety of sizes and colors for personal items (like water bottles, lunch boxes, and headphones) and clothing, and support Hyde! Go to campaigns.mabelslabels.com and search for "Hyde-Addison PTA (Washington).

The PTA Executive Board is hard at work behind the scenes planning for a fun and engaging year. As a reminder, there are no dues or fees to join the PTA, and we welcome participation from all Hyde-Addison families! More information on upcoming meetings and events, and additional ways to get involved will follow in the coming weeks.

Summer is a great time to have some fun while raising academic skills/readiness by reading, reading, and reading! Here are some special summer programs to keep you and your student going!

• Keep a record of 3 books you read this summer and receive a free book of your choice from Barnes and Noble through the Summer Reading program.
  
  
• Looking for some fun and low-key activities to do this summer that support literacy learning? Check out these great suggestions from Reading Is Fundamental (RIF).

DC Public Library has a Discover Summer gameboard for students! This year's prizes include Nats baseball tickets, a free Wendy's frosty, and more! It officially starts this Saturday, June 17th. The library is also sponsoring free museum days across the city and special events at library locations.

This year there is one gameboard for all ages, so the whole family can participate! While signing up online enters participants for raffles, you can also just use the gameboard and return it to any DC Public Library by August 31st for prizes (while supplies last). If anyone has participated in the last few years, they most likely have an account already online and it just needs to be updated.
