Hear Us Roar
Pre-K-
The learning that happens daily in our Pre-K classrooms is nothing short of amazing! Just last week alone, our students were able to experience chicks hatching, learn about animal life cycles, engage in hands on learning in the Maker Space lab, AND round out the week with a rootin' tootin' Rodeo on Friday! We have such talented PK teachers and Teaching Assistants who are working hard to ensure dynamic learning experiences.
Did you know that Early Learning Day is coming on April 5th? This is a day for incoming PreK and Kindergarten students to learn all about the Early Childhood program at Mills! If you know of any PreK or Kinder age children in our neighborhood, please share the Early Learning Day flyer below.
Academic UIL-
This past Saturday, our magnificent Mountain Lions participated in academic UIL at Travis High School with other schools across Austin ISD. They competed their hearts out in Ready Writing, Social Studies, Number Sense, and Spelling. We are so proud of the 41 students who participated in UIL this year, and the 14 students who moved on to the district level. Huge congrats to Ilyas in 2nd grade who won 1st place in Spelling. Wow!
Art & Music Showcase-
Have you seen the art in our hallways? Take a look at the Big Art Day final product, 'Starry Night', by the library. This mural is a testament to the magic of collaboration. It's a true beauty! It's special hearing students get excited when they find their own art piece within the mural! Also, ask your child about what they are learning in Music! March is Art Month in Texas, as well as Music in Our School Month (MOSM). The 4th grade Choir concert last week was beautiful!
Why is Friday, 3/31 a Holiday? Cesar Chavez/Delores Heurta Day
The Chavez-Huerta Day of Service is a day to honor the legacy of two incredible Latinos in the fight for the rights of American farm workers: César Chávez and Dolores Huerta.
Together, the two activists founded United Farm Workers of America, the largest farm worker union in the U.S. to this day.
Their fight for greater rights changed laws and improved conditions for agricultural workers.
Chavez-Huerta Day recognizes the contributions of workers and promotes service and volunteerism in communities.
Also known as César Chávez Day, the holiday is celebrated on March 31st in commemoration of Chávez’s birthday. California declared it as a state holiday in 2000. Several other states, including Arizona, Washington, Colorado, Michigan, New Mexico, Texas, and Wisconsin, also celebrate.
