Our Special Education students were invited to participate in our first Unified Event: Track & Field this past Tuesday at Nansemond River High School. Unified Sports is sponsored by the Special Olympics to promote inclusion of all students in athletics. We were lucky enough to have six of our own Track and Field athletes volunteer to be mentors and friends for our students to learn and participate in the event. Various other schools were invited such as Windsor High School, Portsmouth, Franklin, and King’s Fork. They participated in multiple events such as: 100m run, 400m run, 4x100 run, softball throw, turbojav, long jump, 25m assist, and tennis ball throw. A few of our students took first place in some of the events!

Across the state, Wednesday, April 19, will be the day to “Purple Up! For Military Kids.” We encourage the entire school community – teachers, principals, students, parents, bus drivers, and staff to wear purple on April 19 to show support for our military students and appreciation for their strength and sacrifices. Purple represents the blending of the colors of the five branches of our armed forces. Here in Isle of Wight County, we are proud to be home to Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, Navy, National Guard and Reserve families.

At the April 6 School Board meeting, the board voted to approve a Snow Day in May!

IWCS has time built into the calendar to allow for missed days due to weather or unforeseen circumstances. IWCS has missed very little time this year and, as such, the Board elected to make May 26, the Friday before Memorial Day, a student and staff holiday.

The hope is this time will allow students and staff to recharge before entering the final stretch of the school year.

The educational purpose of this contest is to give high school students enrolled in Isle of Wight County Schools an opportunity to express their artistic talent through the art of storytelling based on specific themes. The project will benefit and bring awareness to the Prolific Place Community Garden and the StormWater Retention System in Windsor Castle Park. See the link below for more information.

The Summer High School Transportation Institute (STI) is an enriching educational opportunity for rising high school juniors and seniors. Since its first STI program in 1993, N.C. A&T’s Transportation Institute has introduced hundreds of high school students to careers and academic pursuits in transportation.

The 2023 Summer Transportation Institute will take place from July 9th-July 23rd, 2023. The program will be residential, so students will live on campus for two weeks and get a taste of the Aggie experience, including dorm life, campus food, recreational facilities, and more. The program is completely free, including food, lodging, and travel. Apply today!
