Our Condolences to the Families in Buffalo
Saturday afternoon saw another tragic, racist attack on innocent citizens of Buffalo. Our thoughts and condolences go out to the families and friends of those killed and wounded.
When will this end? We are all Americans and deserve the right to pursue life, liberty, and happiness without fear. But, yet, our friends and family cannot even go to the supermarket?!
These issues cannot be avoided. This and other issues must be discussed in a critical, open fashion. We have been through a lot these past two years. However, this does not excuse this heinous act.
We need to focus on compassion for one another as human beings.
We need to focus on our differences as a bedrock idea that makes America beautiful.
We need to focus on coming together, not creating a separatist environment.
In my opinion, change happens in our schools. Our public schools are the best place to heal the past and build a better future. Our community is a rich, diverse community that accepts one another. Walk the halls of our buildings, and you will understand what it means to "love" one another. The future is not built by those who want to tear us apart. But, unfortunately, they live amongst us. Unfortunately, this time of year tends to bring out negative energy.
People are so concerned about protecting what they believe belongs to them. Yet, we are all human beings and Americans. We ALL have a right to the American dream.
We need to be better. We do this and must do more in our public schools daily.
National Junior Honor Society Ceremony
NJHS Advisor, Mrs. Parker-Hall and Principal, Mr. Murray congratulated the newest members to be named to the National Junior Honor Society. The National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) is more than just an honor roll. The Honor Society chapter establishes rules for membership that are based upon a student's outstanding performance in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship. These criteria for selection form the foundation upon which the organization and its activities are built.
Scholarship: Students who have a cumulative grade point average of 85 percent or higher, for six consecutive marking periods, meet the scholarship requirement for membership in the West Hempstead Chapter. These students are then eligible for consideration on the basis of service, leadership, character, and citizenship.
Service: This quality is defined through the voluntary contributions made by a student to the school or community, done without compensation and with a positive approach.
Leadership: Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, promoters of school activities, idea-contributors, dependable, and persons who exemplify positive attitudes about life.
Character: The student of good character upholds principles of morality and ethics, is cooperative, demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability, and shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others.
Citizenship: The student who demonstrates citizenship understands the importance of civic involvement, has high regard for freedom, justice, and democracy, and demonstrates mature participation and responsibility through involvement with such activities as scouting, community organizations, and school clubs.
