RPS Update
January 12, 2024
Dear Families, Faculty, and Staff,
On Monday, January 15, 2024, schools will be closed in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King. I ask that our students spend time recognizing and having discussions about the significance of this day, and the contributions of Dr. King’s legacy. Further, we ask that students generalize Dr. King’s legacy by considering what each of us can do to create a world where everyone is valued, seen, and heard? While looking for quotes to share in this letter, there were so many; all of them impacting me differently and profoundly. I would encourage others to do this seemingly small activity too. My pick, "The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy." Strength to Love, 1963.
On Tuesday, January 16, we will have our Board of Education meeting. The agenda can be viewed here. If the weather keeps you from coming out, you can tune in from the warmth of your home. On that topic, the weather this week was slightly disruptive; and we thank our families for their patience as students were re-routed to various stops which caused delays and flexibility. It appears that next week may be tricky as well so please be on the lookout for weather announcements.
I am often heard speaking of our amazing faculty– this week, I was reminded of an email reply from a teacher after sending my announcement about the possibility of a school closure, “I always miss my kids so much, so I hope not. But at the same time I don’t want to see them if they can’t get to school safely! Thanks for responding and making my day. I miss you more!” Go RPS! We do have amazing faculty.
Have a great weekend.
Warmly,
Susie

Reminder: Photography + Social Media Request
Please keep in mind that it can be concerning for families, staff, or RPS security to have an unknown person photographing a school site or students at a bus stop. We ask that you receive permission from the building principal before snapping photos on or near school grounds.
As we approach budget presentation season, we ask that you refrain from mentioning teachers, BOE members, administrators, parents, or students by name on social media. Please contact classroom teachers or building principals first with questions or concerns about students. Concerns for the Board of Education, can be sent to boardofed@ridgefieldps.net or raised during the public comment at the beginning and end of every Board of Education meeting. Thank you for helping make RPS a great place to work, volunteer, and learn!
In this week’s episode of Ridgefield Tiger Talk, we welcome Jeffrey Corbishley, RPS’s 6–12 Math/Science Supervisor. We discuss some of the new exciting program updates to our 6-12 math program, how our math departments support students, what a modern math classroom looks like, and some other ways a student can extend their mathematics opportunities outside of the normal classroom setting. You don’t want to miss this great show, thanks for listening!
RPS Plans "Forever Summer Bridge"—Registration Later in January
We are excited to announce the official launch of Forever Summer Bridge at RPS. We have taken all of the successful elements of our grant-funded Summer Bridge programs and created a new low-cost, high-quality summer experience for RPS students taught by our qualified and talented RPS teachers. Read more about our plans for each level below. We'll have a new program for our incoming kindergarteners! More information will be released soon with registration opening at the end of January.
Elementary (Rising K to Rising 5th graders) located at Farmingville
Students can sign up for up to three weeks of innovative project-based experiences with a new theme each week. A new element is the Jump Start to Kindergarten program for our rising kindergarteners. Students in Jump Start, in addition to themed-project based learning, will engage in academic, social emotional, and executive function activities to help bridge the transition to kindergarten. Click here for more about the elementary program.
Middle School (Rising 6th to Rising 8th graders) located at RHS
Our middle school will offer our traditional selection of intensive, project-based courses from 2 to 3 days. Last year, the offerings included cooking, crafts, STEM, and visual arts projects. For the first time, we are also offering one week-long 'Tune-Up' courses in academic areas for students who want a little extra practice. Classes run from 9 am-12 pm and will be held at RHS during the first three weeks of June. Prices range from $80 per student for a two-day intensive, to $120 for a three-day Intensive Course, and $200 per student for a five-day tune-up.
High School (Rising 9th to 11th graders) located at RHS
Ridgefield High School plans on offering three types of experiences to our students this summer. We will continue to present engaging intensive courses, which are fun, cross-curricular, and project-based for two to three days from 9 am to 12 pm. In addition, we will run one week-long 'Tune-Up Courses' designed to build skills needed at the high school level, which will be for two and a half hours a day. Finally, we will offer a few courses for high school credit. All high school-level courses will take place in July.
Summer Volunteer Opportunities for High School Students
The Forever Summer Bridge Program at RPS will also continue to offer volunteer opportunities to RHS.
Please contact Assistant Superintendent Cory Gillette cgillette@ridgefieldps.net with any questions.

engagED Webpage Update: Universal Screeners in Elementary and Middle School
In grades K-8, students complete universal screeners three times a year in reading and mathematics. These diagnostics help teachers support the needs and build upon the strengths of our students. Additional resources for families will be added to the engagED webpage on the RPS Curriculum Site in the next few weeks. The engagED page provides important information for families and community members to support learning at home, in school, and beyond. The page will include information about aimsWebPLUS Reading and NWEA Mathematics used in the Elementary grades as well as the iReady Reading and Mathematics diagnostics given in Middle School.
It’s Elementary [Curriculum Implementation], Dear Watson
Professional Learning for Fourth and Fifth-Grade Teachers
Last year, RPS selected Building Vocabulary, an elementary curriculum resource created by Teacher Created Materials, for fourth and fifth-grade classes. Building Vocabulary focuses on vocabulary acquisition using Greek and Latin prefixes, suffixes, and bases as a way to increase students’ understanding of word meanings and reading comprehension.
Elementary Director Linda Johnson explains that a part of the successful implementation of this (and any) newly adopted resource includes continued professional learning. Educators from Building Vocabulary came to the District in August to train teachers. Now, fourth and fifth-grade teachers are receiving further instruction. Staff developer Alissa Reicherter of Alongside Learning, LLC. visited Barlow Mountain, Ridgebury, Scotland, and Veterans Park elementary school classrooms this week. Branchville and Farmingville will be rescheduled because of the delay on Wednesday.
Scotland Elementary Literacy Coach Alaina Kakos commented further, “The teams are studying best teaching practices, including the design and delivery of lessons using Building Vocabulary. In lab sites, teachers notice and discuss evidence of explicit instruction and study practices to enhance student understanding. Teachers are also planning and delivering engaging, embedded vocabulary instruction within the context of high-quality read-aloud. Students benefit from frequent and deliberate practice opportunities; specific, timely feedback; and partnerships that foster high-level discussions.”
English is not “all Greek” to us…It’s also Latin! President! Conduct! Inspect!! These are just some of the Greek and Latin-derived words students are learning about in fourth and fifth grade.
Please Help Spread the Word About Kindergarten Registration
RPS is excited to be a part of the milestone experience of kindergarten registration with our youngest students and their families. We ask that RPS families alert their neighbors, friends, etc. that kindergarten registration is open. Because of the change in CT's cut off date, prior planning will be particularly important this year so please enroll students ASAP.
The State of Connecticut announced a new cut off date so all children who reach the age of five (5) on or before September 1, 2024 are eligible for enrollment. RPS wants to work with families during this transition year. Please read all of the information here. The following dates might be helpful in preparing for this exciting rite of passage.

In the Classroom and Beyond
Students Reflect on MLK Jr. + His Dream for Racial Equality
Recently, East Ridge students wrote essays about Martin Luther King, Jr. and his dreams for racial equality for Senator Chris Murphy's essay contest. Sixth-grade social studies teacher Maureen Tyra organized a bulletin board in the ERMS cafeteria with a copy of MLK's famous "I Have a Dream Speech," photos of and quotes from Dr. King, and some of the students' essays.
RHS Students Write Stories With Elementary Protagonists
Patricia Boutilier's RHS Creative Writing students received a warm welcome from Michelle Flynn's third-grade classroom at Veterans Park Elementary School. Each third grader was the protagonist of a unique story created in collaboration with a high schooler. The Creative Writing class met with Ms. Flynn's class back in December to brainstorm ideas for stories, and last Friday, RHS students shared their published Children's Literature books with their grade-three partners. As you can see from the pictures below, both high schoolers and third graders had a wonderful time celebrating fiction.
Social and Emotional Spotlight
Veterans Park Catches Kindness
Yesterday, Veterans Park Elementary fifth-grade student council members led an all-school assembly to kick off their "Catch Kindness" campaign—a series of student-led initiatives to spread goodwill and teach students practical social emotional skills. The students were amazingly well-spoken even though they expressed being very nervous. It was great to see even the shyest students take advantage of this leadership opportunity as well as the enthusiastic response from the rest of school.
Middle Schools Adopt Say Something Anonymous Reporting Program
This week, East Ridge and Scotts Ridge families received a letter about the Say Something Anonymous Reporting System. The system, piloted at RHS for the past few months, provides students with wrap-around access 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year to live support via an app, hotline, or website if they or a classmate is at risk of harming themselves or others. Middle school students will learn about this voluntary and anonymous support during a forthcoming homeroom session.

A Superlative Week for RPS Music!
It was a stellar week for RPS Music! On Sunday, the combined RHS, Scotts Ridge and East Ridge select chorus braved the weather to head to Carnegie Hall to perform John Rutter's Magnificat, conducted by the composer with other choirs and distinguished soloists. "Singing John Rutter's piece under his direction," Choir Director Lauren Verney-Fink writes, "Is just unbelievable. What a special event this is. I am so proud of our students who have worked so hard and seem really happy." See a clip from Saturday's New Jersey rehearsal below.
The RHS Band Concert Delights
On Wednesday, the RHS Winter Band Concert, under the direction of George Beratis, showcased the dedication and talent of RHS students. The Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, and Jazz Band were all tremendous. Thank you, Tigers!
Beyond the Classroom
PTA and Library Offer Young Writers' Conference!
