5th Grade Science with Mr. McIntosh
Looking Back –
We started Unit 3 by looking at the traits of individuals that are passed through genetic code. From hair color to height, from eyes to earlobes, we inherit so much from our parents. We looked at the ways that genes can combine to result in traits that might surprise us. In the Looking Ahead section, we will start to look at the behaviors of organisms and where they may come from.
Lessons for Sept. 24-28: Unit 3, Lessons 1 & 2: Inherited Traits
Key Vocabulary: inherited trait, dominant, recessive, gene, probability
Looking Ahead -
We will continue looking at how animal behaviors and how they develop through experiences and the environment in which they live. We will read about pioneering behavioral scientists such as Konrad Lorenz and Ivan Pavlov and their contributions to our understanding of animal behavior. We will begin our look at the critical cycles of three of our most important environmental ingredients: nitrogen, carbon, and water and how human activities have affected their balance.
Assignments for the week of Oct. 1-5: Unit 3, Lesson 3: Learned Characteristics, and Lesson 4: Cycles in Nature: Nitrogen, Carbon, Water, Part 1
TGA #2 will be assigned on Monday, Oct. 1st! Look for it in USA Test Prep.
Key vocabulary: heredity, genetics, carbon dioxide/oxygen cycle, combustion, condensation, evaporation, precipitation, respiration, nitrogen cycle
Creature of the week – Let’s check out another very unusual reptile this week. The leaf chameleon was only discovered in 2012 and is found in very few places in the world. Do some research before our next class and share what you have learned with your classmates!
