A Message from the Principal
Dear Eccles Families,
This week we held our sixth Learning Walk of the school year with district administrators. It is a high priority of our Superintendent and CSD Executive Team to visit classrooms in every school in order to know our teachers and see what we are working on. This week we visited kindergarten and 2nd grade classrooms.
All year we have focused on structures and strategies to help students participate and make meaning. It was just a normal Tuesday, but there were many structures and strategies on display as we visited each classroom. We observed stations for small group instruction, singing, PB&J talk partners, goal-setting, tools such as mini-whiteboards, sentence stems, journals with scaffolds, student choice, and published student writing.
I share this with you because I am proud of the work our teachers do every day. We appreciate your support on early release CT days so we can continue to align our instructional practices. And I am proud of our students! They are full of joy, curiosity, and a desire to learn. One second grader was trying to figure out who our superintendent, Dr. Downs, was. He said, “Oh, so he is the boss, boss, boss.” You can’t help, but smile.
It is a joy to work with your kids and our staff on a daily basis. These next two months are a great opportunity for making lots of progress. We are looking forward to a strong spring of learning!
Please see below for important events next week, such as Kindergarten Kick-off and Jog-a-thon.
Sincerely,
Kelly

Kinder Kick-off is Coming & Registration is Live!
Kinder Kick-offs are happening this month! Children who will be age 5+ by Sept. 1 are invited to imagine a day in the life of a kindergartner! Meet the teachers and principal, tour the school, and receive a welcome gift bag. Those interested in the Dual Language Immersion program can visit Trost Elementary School from 6-7 p.m. on April 11, and otherwise families can visit their neighborhood school (including Eccles) from 6-7 p.m. on April 18.
Health Curriculum Adoption Parent Input Opportunity
The Canby School District will host a Zoom meeting on Wednesday, April 19 from 6-7 p.m. in English and 7-8 p.m. in Spanish. The goal is to have 12-15 parents answer some questions and provide input about health education and instruction in Canby. We will use this information to support our planning for our Health Curriculum adoption and Parent Open House on April 26. If you are interested, please complete this Google Form. If we have great interest, we will choose participants by lottery to create a small enough group for our input session.
Water Testing
Canby School District has completed its first cycle of lead and copper water testing, and all fixtures came in under the state requirement of 15 parts per million. We collected samples from Ackerman, the district office and maintenance shop, Baker Prairie Middle School, and Canby High School. All fixtures were tested as long as a student could cup their hands under it to collect water.
Those interested can view the reports here: HASS Healthy and Safe School Reports.
Testing will take place in the 2023-2024 year for the remaining schools: Carus, Eccles, Knight, Lee, Ninety-One, and Trost.
For questions, please reach out to Shawna Grant, District Operation Specialists with Facilities, at sgrant@canby.k12.or.us or 503-266-0018 xt. 3920.
Join C.A.S.T. for Kids for a FREE fishing event for children with special needs!
The C.A.S.T. for Kids Foundation enriches the lives of children with special needs, supports their families, and strengthens the communities through the sport of fishing. This year, they are hosting a new event to be held Saturday, May 20th at Kyllo Reservoir, a pond on private property just south of Canby. Fishing equipment is included and families are welcome.

Important Health Reminders
The following two items need to come to school with students each day:
- Water bottles - For health and sanitary reasons, the mouth spout of our drinking fountains have been turned off, but the water bottle filler is still on.
- Jackets
If your student is in need of assistance getting one of these items, we can help. Please don't hesitate to reach out to the office staff at (503) 263-7120 or eccles-office@canby.k12.or.us.
Please remember to review our district and school health stay home guidelines. If you have any questions about whether a student should stay home, please don't hesitate to contact the office and we can put you in touch with our Health Assistant or District Nurse. We appreciate your help in keeping not only your student, but all other students, staff and families healthy this school year.
Meals at School
Your children may qualify for free meals or for reduced-price meals, and we now offer expanded income guidelines to qualify more families. If you plan to have your child eat school-provided breakfast or lunch, please fill out a Meal Application online at https://www.ode.state.or.us/apps/frlapp - Our district ensures that our nutrition programs are easily accessible to all families.
