Happy Fall
It is hard to believe that it is October already. I must say that fall is probably my favorite time of year. I enjoy the crisp mornings that often lead to pleasant afternoons and end with those harvest moons. All sports and activities are in full swing as you can see from the full calendar of events. If you have time or opportunity to attend any of our athletic events, community classes, or parent meetings we would love to see you and the kids love to see you too!
Additionally, the City of Medical Lake is continuing to have weekly Gray Fire informational meetings for those affected by the fire as well as the whole community. At these meetings, you can learn about how things are progressing as well as ways you can volunteer to assist if you are interested in doing so. More information is provided at the City of Medical Lake website. Our community response has been outstanding as we wrap services and support around our friends and neighbors. Thank you!

More News
We want to share more information regarding the development of our Family Connections and Student Advisory groups. Any feedback or suggestions you have would be very welcome as we would like these to be a meaningful means to further engage both our students and families at MLSD.
Family Connections - As a means to further develop our sense of belonging with our families, we are creating a Family Connections group with at least two representatives from each of our buildings. If you have suggestions for possible representatives or wish to be a member yourself, please let your supervisor know. Our first meeting is October 30, so if we are hoping to send out invitations the week of October 16.
Student Advisory- In addition to Family Connections, in August, I shared with the board at their request, a structure for creating a student advisory group (in this case two) to gather authentic student voice. It seemed important that we include representatives from all of our buildings and so we thought two groups would work better. One group will have student representatives from grades 5 - 8, and the other will have student representatives from grades 9 - 12.
Impact Aid Cards: Impact Aid cards were sent home on Monday, October 2nd. We strongly encourage families to complete the cards and return them to your student's school. These cards are very important for the district to maintain federal funding.
Federal Impact Aid represents 8% of our annual budget at $2.4 million, with approximately $100,000 for our students with disabilities. We serve 800 military-impacted students in our district representing 45% of our student population. This funding supports many programs across our district including our on-base preschool at Michael Anderson, additional staffing at each school, as well as district-wide extracurricular programs. We are so appreciative of the congressional support for our students as it helps us to make a difference for Every Student, Every Day!
