Restorative Justice at Reid High School - october
Shout-Out
- BLAST Community Building Circles: Thank you to all of the BLAST staff (Ms. Alvarez, Ms. Agis, Mr. Rodriguez, Mr. Lopez) for co-planning and co-facilitating Community Building Circles in their Periods 3-6. It was amazing to witness the shared stories and establishment of deeper connections with one another while reflecting over the following questions during our discussion round: What is something you would like to improve about your self, community, and world? What is something that you can do to promote that change? So proud of each of you and your patience with the students as we built community. This is only the beginning!
- Professional Development: Thank you to the staff who were able to attend the first of four Professional Development workshops Gabrielle Thurmond (CCEJ Restorative Justice Strategist and Trainer) and I will be leading over the school year. I appreciated seeing your engagement with the Equity Traps text, your motivation to challenge various components of the article, and your willingness to reflect on how we as a Reid community can be mindful of those traps to ensure we continue serving our students and supporting one another in the best ways possible.
- Reid Team: Lastly, I must give a big thank you to the entire Reid team for open lines of communication, checking in to support one another, and working as an overall unit. This has allowed us to deescalate various situations that could have evolved into serious conflicts. Let's continue showing up for one another and our students and we take Reid to the next level by building community and healing relationships.
Co-Planning Community Building Circles
I will be checking in with you all this week and the following week asking for your availability to meet and co-plan Community Building Circles in your classrooms. Remember that we have a community goal of each teacher completing at least three Community Building Circles by the end of the school year! I am certain we can accomplish this goal and we will definitely see the positive impact it has on Reid's campus climate.
COMMUNITY CHECK-INS
Although the year is progressing and my relationships with you all are developing, I still want to make time to review the questions below individually in the upcoming weeks! When I drop by your classes, I will also try to set up times for us to execute this Community Check-In.
Tell Me About Yourself: One of the main keys to cultivating a positive school culture is authentic community building. With that being said, feel free to answer the following questions so that I can get to know you on a deeper level:
- Where are you from and what was it like growing up?
- What makes you happy and what do you like to do during your free time?
- How would you describe yourself as an educator and your teaching style?
- How do you create community in your classrooms?
Self-Care
Self-Care: Working with youth can be extremely fun and rewarding, but can also be taxing. I would encourage us all to take some time and think about what are we doing to take care of ourselves. I commend each of us for caring so deeply about the success of our young people, but in order to show up to this work whole and replenished, we must be intentional about scheduling time to engage in activities that restore US.
