Through the Halls of West End

Dear Families,

The month of October was a very exciting month filled with so much fun and learning! Students celebrated their success in following our PAWS behavior expectations by attending the first nine weeks PBIS celebration. Our PTO did a phenomenal job hosting our annual fall festival and spooky sprint. PTO raised nearly $9,000 to benefit our students and teachers. We enjoyed having everyone on campus during these events. Red ribbon week was also a fun week, as students enjoyed dressing up and learning to make healthy choices. We are very proud to announce during the Best of Rome event hosted on October 28th, West End was named the BEST public elementary school in Rome/Floyd County!! Allison Brown (3rd Grade Teacher) was also named the BEST teacher, and our Pre-K program was runner-up. We have so much to be proud of at West End, and we contribute our success to our faculty and staff, students, and West End families. Together, we all make a difference. It is truly an honor to be a part of this team, and we can't wait to see what the rest of the school year will bring!

Third grade students have spent the first of the school year engaged in fun learning activities. In science, they have studied about insulators and conductors. Third grade teachers helped to bring learning to life by creating solar ovens to make s'mores. Teachers also transformed their classrooms into the Honey Bee Diner to increase students' math knowledge in their first unit of study. Afterwards, students enjoyed some delicious graham crackers and honey. They also went on their first field trip of the school year to New Echota Indian Mounds. This trip reinforced what they have learned about the Native Americans in social studies. 3rd grade literacy is setting up students to have their best reading life yet! They are currently studying mystery books and working to read them as reading detectives in order to solve the mystery before the crime solvers do in their books! In writing class, students turned into teachers by working through their informational writing unit by learning how to write to teacher others.

The following students were selected by their teachers to attend a very special luncheon with Dr. Drummond. This month's award was titled "Outstanding in October". These students were outstanding using their PAWS behavior, and we will be celebrating their success on Friday, November 5th.

On Thursday, November 11, 2021, we will be celebrating Veterans Day at West End Elementary. We are asking that all of our students wear red, white, and blue to school that day. We will be honoring our veterans with a special assembly at 1:00 pm. We would love for any family members of West End students who are veterans to be our honored guests that day. If your child has a family member that is a veteran that would be able to attend, please make sure to complete the form that was sent home to your child’s homeroom teacher by Monday, Nov. 8th.

School year 2020-21 was a challenging one for all – but we learned some important things we’ll take with us beyond the pandemic. One bright spot was the opportunity to connect with students’ families in ways we hadn’t before. As we begin to transition back to normalcy, one of our goals is reconnecting with our families by hosting events throughout the school year. We would like to introduce you to the ladies who will be very active in engaging our families in fun activities for the whole family.

Each month, Mrs. Futral we will be sharing a family challenge. These challenges give your family an opportunity to do something creative together! After you complete the family challenge, be sure to send us a photo to be featured on our social media page!

This month's family challenge: Now that the weather's changing and the leaves are falling, this month's family challenge is to create a LEAF CRAFT! Be creative! Be sure to submit a picture of your final product and your family to WEEFamilies@rcs.rome.ga.us. There will be a prize for the most creative leaf!! We cannot wait to see what you come up with!!

Please write your child's name on personal belongings such as water bottles, jackets, hoodies, etc. to help us return them if they are found. If your child is missing an item, please ask them to check in the lost/ found located in the gym.
