Veterans Day Celebration at OVMS
On Friday, November 10th, more than fifty Veterans were welcomed to OVMS to be celebrated for their service to our country. The morning began with a continental breakfast in the cafeteria and continued with a student-led assembly in the auditorium. The talented students in the Sixth Grade Band and Select Chorus treated everyone to several patriotic musical performances. Eighth graders read the names and delivered flowers to each Veteran as they stood to be recognized for their service.
Each year, members of the Oley Chapter of the American Legion sponsor an essay contest, with the finalists and winners being announced at the Veterans Day assembly. This year’s topic, “Should Flag Etiquette Be Taught in Schools?” was researched by 8th grade social studies students, and 113 essays were submitted to the contest. Congratulations to the finalists and top three winners: Kaden Bojan, Tristan Daughtry, Kayleigh Houser, Sarah Kring, Calli Martin, Timothy Palmer, Indya Schell, Kayla Conlon, Bella Coccia (3rd place), Faith Brown (2nd place), and Katelynn Prokopovits (1st place). Katelynn’s essay will move on to the state competition in early 2024.
One of the highlights of the morning was the recognition of Mr. Warren Fisher (Seaman 1st Class, United States Navy), Great-Grandfather of 8th grader Sarah Kring. Mr. Fisher served aboard the U.S.S. Kline in the Pacific during World War II between 1944-1946. One of the duties of Mr. Fisher during his service was to transport the heroic sailors of the Underwater Demolition Teams (UDTs), known as ‘Frogmen,’ to various locations in the Pacific. During President Kennedy’s term in office, the Frogmen were renamed and are known today as the highly elite Navy SEALs.
Many thanks to Mr. Fisher and to all our brave Veterans for their service to our country! We are so grateful to each of you and so happy you chose to celebrate with us this year!

A Frightfully Delightful October
On October 20th and 21st the Oley Valley FFA Alumni Chapter held the 4th Annual Haunted Hike! Members of the FFA chapter and volunteers worked for weeks to clean the trail and setup. On October 1st members cleaned the hill; there were trees down, leaves everywhere, weeds, and more. They laid down mulch to make the trail less rocky also. On October 15, members set up the trail. Each group was assigned a place on the trail and they set up their spooky spot! Groups then came on October 20th, got their makeup done and headed up the hill for an hour of trick-or-treating, it was so fun to get to see familiar faces and lots of fun costumes. At 7 the scaring began! Members went from nice to scary and let out lots of shrieks and screams. On Friday, we got rained on and finished the hike at 9 because of weather conditions. On Saturday the weather was beautiful, and we welcomed more trick-or-treaters up the hill. Night two was even scarier, as members knew what to expect and wanted to make it count! Not only did we have members on the hill scaring, but we also had carnival games, lots of food as well. We had so much fun and cannot wait until next year!
On October 27th the FFA Chapter held the Halloween Party in the AG wing. Members who signed up wore costumes, played games such as apple bobbing, mummy wrap, frozen T-shirt, and carved pumpkins! They had pizza and ended the night line dancing!
On November 1st through the 4th four members competed at the National Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana. Jacob Mowry (senior), Elita Bogdanova (sophomore), Kendra Barlet (senior) and Emily Seidel (senior) represented Pennsylvania in the Milk Quality and Products Career Development Event. Emily Seidel received a gold medal, Jacob Mowry and Elita Bogdanova both received silver medals, and Kendra Barlet earned a bronze medal. They ended silver as a team! We could not be prouder of these FFA members and all of their hard work this year.

Thanksgiving Mugs: A Cup Full of Appreciation and Joy
In the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving, Mrs. Kallis’s students decided they would like to share appreciation and joy for the amazing people who work and learn at OVHS. In order to participate in the activity, each student volunteered to purchase two mugs and fill them with treats and trinkets. One of the mugs was delivered to a faculty or staff member of the student’s choice, and the other went to one of Mrs. Kallis’s students who also opted to partake in the endeavor. Each student who participated provided two mugs and received a mug in return. these people who work so industriously and passionately at their jobs receive a mug and a heartfelt message of appreciation. Students were eager to recognize the adults and quickly matched with people to “mug.” Not long after, the students filled their classroom with over two hundred mugs in all shapes and sizes and containing a wide variety of offerings. On Monday, November 20th, during lynx, students enthusiastically delivered the mugs. Furthermore, each student anxiously searched the countertops to find the mug with his or her name. After all of the mugs were distributed, students and adults reflected upon their full cups with appreciation and joy – achieving the intended outcome of the event.
“Fill your cup and your life with love…for what you put in will certainly come back to you.”
Happy Holidays to All
