Message from Dr. Taylor
Mustang families,
On Thursday, January 18th, we are hosting our Class of 2028 Incoming Freshmen Night at Mundelein High School for both families and students. The program will include an overview of our academic programs, course placements, information on the day-in-the-life of a ninth grader, and extracurricular opportunities at MHS.
Both parents and students are invited to attend. Incoming ninth graders will meet with high school students to learn more about what they will experience as they transition to MHS. Topics such as classes, activities, athletics, and special events will be discussed. Students will also have an opportunity to ask questions about the transition to high school.
We ask that parents/guardians and students with last names A-L arrive at the MHS auditorium by 6:00 PM for a 45-minute presentation. Parents/guardians and students with last names M-Z should attend the 7:15 PM session in the auditorium. The presentation will be offered in Spanish in the cafeteria during both sessions. Spanish-speaking families can also use translation headphones for the presentation in the auditorium.
Following the presentations, we will host our Activities/Athletics Fair, where sponsors, coaches, and students will be available to speak about their respective clubs or sports, answer questions, and enlist future members. In addition, department chairs and other administrators will be available to answer any questions you may have about the transition to high school.
For more information about the transition to MHS, please visit the D120 web page under Incoming 9th Grade Parents. At MHS, it is very important to us that every student experiences a meaningful, rigorous, and enriching experience. We encourage you to reach out with any questions you may have. Important message from our Associate Principal of Operations
Some new changes for this semester include the installation of vape sensors in the restrooms here at MHS. If you’ve used any of our standard restrooms recently, you may have noticed signage that has been posted regarding these sensors.
On a local, state, and national level, many students are known to be experimenting with vaping, and many are doing so at school. To do our part to mitigate vaping at MHS, sensors have been installed to detect when vaping has occurred. The administration will monitor the notifications of the vape sensors to assist in mitigating the negative impact of vaping at MHS.
If it is determined that a student may have been vaping, a student may be assessed and possibly searched. If a student is presumed to be under the influence, we will follow our district code of conduct and any disciplinary actions aligned with the code of conduct will be enforced. Additionally, we will provide support for the student with a follow-up from our Student Support Teams.
The vape sensors are a tool to help us create a safer and healthier learning environment for our students. We encourage parents and guardians to speak with their children about the dangers of vaping and to reinforce the school’s commitment to promoting healthy behaviors. If you would like additional background before speaking with your young adult, you can reference this article from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
We must work together to continue to educate our students on the dangers of vaping and the effect it has on their bodies. Our Health teachers and Student Support personnel will continue to facilitate awareness lessons and campaigns. We all have a responsibility to guide and support our students and together we can maintain a safe and healthy school environment.
For further support and/or questions, please reach out to your student’s Dean at (847) 949-2200.
Sincerely,
Michael Souza

Congratulations to Mr. Billittier
This week we had the distinct honor of welcoming a parent to our staff meeting. When Mrs. Cordova requested the opportunity to participate she did not go into great detail about the thank you she wished to express, but her speech at the meeting brought tears to our eyes and a standing ovation for Mr. Billittier.
"Emmanuel has been in our district's Special Education System for many years. During this time, he has been blessed by so many people: teachers, therapists, paraprofessionals, administrative staff and many others that it is difficult to mention them all. Each one of them has helped us in the task of forming the young man that Emmanuel is today. We have seen him grow in many areas: athletically, academically, emotionally, socially, and professionally.
Today, I would like to take a moment to recognize Mr. Eric Billittier and express our deep gratitude, appreciation and recognition for his work as a teacher and especially as a coach of our son and each of the wonderful young people in our district who participate in the Special Olympics sports.
Mr. Billittier has made a difference in our community, he has made a difference in our schools and he has especially made a difference in the lives of the young people he coaches. His dedication, commitment, patience, support, kindness, empathy and many other qualities and values have made our athletes give their best, achieve their goals and want to go for more, and have fun throughout the entire process! We greatly appreciate Mr. Billitier for valuing each player equally and for helping them excel in whatever position they are in. Each family has been blessed by Mr. Billitier’s empathy. He has supported each family who all come from different situations.
Mr. B, thank you for believing in each athlete even when they doubt their own abilities. Your patience and wisdom have been invaluable to their growth as athletes and as people.
Someone said that people might forget what you said, people might forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel. And you, Mr. Billittier, have made our athletes feel like champions. Thank you so much!!"

Eight MHS Students Kick Off 2024 by Gaining Engineering Experience
During Winter Break, eight students attended a ten-hour pre-apprenticeship experience at LMT Onsrud, a global manufacturer of high-precision cutting tools. Debbie Scott, HR and Safety Manager, and Dalibor Maksimovic, Manufacturing Training and Development Manager, led Mustangs Michael Chen, Scott Gillig, Erik Gonzalez, Rishi Sahu, Dylan Valeroso, Catalina Vargas, Christian Wiechering, and Cody Yakimisky through a series of workshops where they learned about various aspects of the manufacturing process. Students attended sessions on engineering, production control, equipment programming, quality control, and tech support. There were tours of the facilities, simulations, a Q&A session with the company’s president, and, of course, fantastic lunches!
At the end of the session, all students shared that the learning they gained from the experience shaped their career decisions. “I already have my focus on a career in aviation,” shared student Catalina Vargas, “but I took this internship to widen my understanding of machinery and operations.”
Catalina was also impressed by the healthy work environment at LMT. “Everyone there seemed happy,” she shared. “I would love to work for a company like that one day”.
Take a look at some of the photos taken during the students’ two-day experience!
Aspiring engineers from Mundelein High School pose for a photo with the staff from LMT Onsrud at the wrap-up of their pre-apprenticeship experience (left). On the right, students observe one of the engineers perform a quality check on one of their high-precision cutting tools. No photos were allowed of the designs--those were top-secret!
We are currently making plans to repeat this experience in the near future! If you are a student--or know of a student--who would like to gain some valuable career experiences in the field of engineering, please contact Alexander Kapotas at 847-949-2200 x1092 or at akapotas@d120.org.
