News from Dr. Wachel
Regular attendance is important for our students. There are times however, when a child is sick and must remain home to get better. In general, children are too sick to come to school when
They are contagious
Their symptoms are serious enough to prevent them from focusing on the tasks they need to do in school
Use this checklist to determine whether to keep your child home from school.
Does your child have a fever of 100 degrees or higher?
Has your child vomited two or more times in a 24-hour period?
Does your child have diarrhea?
Does your child have red eyes with thick, whitish drainage?
Does your child have an undiagnosed rash?
Does your child have severe cold symptoms (cough and congestion)?
If you answered yes to any of these questions, please keep your child home from school and consider seeking medical attention. Families should not allow their child to return to school until the child has been free of fever, vomiting, or diarrhea for a full 24 hours without medication.
Children who have a cold, headache, or stomach ache that is not accompanied by a fever, vomiting, or diarrhea can probably come to school.
Earaches are not contagious. Children can come to school if they can concentrate on their work.
If you have any questions, please contact Nurse Angie at 856-0450.
This video highlights the importance of regular attendance at the elementary level.
Fall Parties
We will have fall parties this year on October 31 (PreK-4). Classroom teachers will reach out to each set of families to discuss snacks and activities for the parties. Parents will be able to join us this year for the fall parties and all guests must check in, receive a visitor badge, and sign their child out if they will take him/her home at the conclusion of the parties.
Students will be able to wear costumes to school this day. Please review the costume guidelines listed below.
Costume Information:
- Costumes must be appropriate for school. At Madison, we serve students from three-years-old (Early Childhood) to Fourth Grade. Horror and gory costumes are not appropriate for school. A good rule of thumb is to consider if a three-year-old would be frightened by a costume. If so, then it should not be brought to school. Thank you for your help in keeping our costumes appropriate for a school setting.
- Costumes and accessories resembling weapons or weapon look-alikes are prohibited at school. This includes plastic/fake knives, swords, guns, spears, etc. and any item that resembles a weapon.
- Students should wear a costume that will allow them to learn throughout the day. For example, no masks or inflatable costumes should be worn to school.
Party Information:
Families are welcome to join us for the party and will check in at the tables located in the main lobby. We ask that families do not arrive prior to 2:15 as we don't want to interfere with the classroom environment. All family members will be allowed down to the classrooms at 2:20. The parties will run from 2:30-3:00 to allow time for staff and students to prepare for dismissal. Thank you for your assistance with arriving after 2:15.
*Early Childhood Families - Please consult your teacher's newsletter for more details on the Early Childhood fall parties and schedule.

A Book for Every Bear (repeat)
Our school will be embarking on a special project, an all-school book club. This school-wide project is sponsored by our Library Media Specialist Mrs. Schmuhl and funded by our Madison Elementary PTA. Every child will receive a copy of a book- and will be asked to read it together at home. I am personally asking you to make the time so that your family can participate in this special activity. It will begin on Monday, October 24th.
Reading aloud at home is valuable because it better prepares your child to be an effective reader, and it is also a fun, worthwhile family activity. With this program, we aim to build a community of readers at our school. Everyone - students, parents, teachers, even administrative staff will all be following along together.
Your students will receive a copy. Along with the book, you will receive a reading schedule so that you can keep up at home. Generally, you will be asked to read about 20 minutes each night.
Preschool through 1st grade will be reading the picture book Click Clack Moo Cows that Type each day for the week of October 24th. Grades 2nd through 4th will be reading The One and Only Ivan starting on the 24th of October and continuing through the 18th of November.
With this program, children in all grade levels will be listening to their parents read. Strange or daring as that may seem, it actually makes sound educational sense. Reading professionals recommend reading material out loud that is beyond a child’s own reading level. We also believe that you can and should continue reading chapter books with your older children, even when they are able to read by themselves. We have selected a title that can be followed and understood and enjoyed by younger students but will still captivate and stimulate older students.
-Your Madison Staff
The One and Only Ivan
Remember this program is all about bringing the whole family together to enjoy a book.

Last week, your child's custom catalog for the Square 1 Art fundraiser came home. This is an activity that was done in Bear Time. Students drew a picture and the Square 1 Art company can print the picture on items such as bags, pillows, pencil holders, trivets, pot holders, etc.
You can use the code on the order form or you can simply search for your child's art using Art Search, and enter state, school name, and your student's name. Your student's art and code will appear, and you may order online!
