Brewing Up Business
Students in Coach Beer’s Business and Marketing class visited the third grade to share their knowledge and explain the day-to-day operations of Java Dawgs, our student-run campus coffee shop. From products to profits, seniors Will Atkinson and Lily Jennings presented an informative slide show and answered questions. This lesson will help third graders as they prepare for Market Day and work to create their own business plan to sell a good or service. Following the presentation by Will and Lily, third-grade students requested a tour of the coffee shop.
Learning Adventure in Atlanta
Our third-grade classes met with Representatives Bruce Williamson and Rey Martinez, the two state legislators who represent Walton County in the Georgia House of Representatives, while on a field trip to the state capitol on February 16. The students were given a tour of the capitol by Rep. Williamson and Rep. Martinez which culminated in a photo session with Governor Brian Kemp. Third graders were able to have a question-and-answer session with Williamson and Martinez on the floor of the House chamber and they visited the Georgia Capitol Museum. The group also toured nearby Mercedes-Benz Stadium and was able to tour inside the locker rooms of the Atlanta Falcons football team and the Atlanta United soccer team.

The Gift of Reading
On February 16, the Lower School Media Center was honored to be presented with five patriotic books from The Matthew Talbot Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution in Monroe. The donated books are entitled:
- Twenty-One Steps: Guarding the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier by Jeff Gottesfeld
- Our Pledge Our Promise: The Pledge of Allegiance Explained by Sheri Wall
- Veterans: Heroes in our Neighborhood by Valerie Pfunstein
- My Brother Sam is Dead by James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier
- A is for Abigail: An Almanac of Amazing Women by Lynne Cheney and Robin Preiss Glasser
The Matthew Talbot Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution was organized in Monroe on January 23, 1914. They are a women’s service organization founded in 1890 and are dedicated to promoting historic preservation, education, patriotism, and honoring the patriots of the Revolutionary War. The society is non-profit, non-political dedicated to preserving the memory and spirit of the men and women who achieved American independence. Thank you to the DAR chapter for their generous donation!

In the Driver's Seat
GWA junior Emily Arenas is a proud member of the WWEX Racing team. With her grip firmly on the wheel of the No. 3 Legends car, Emily has her sights set on a future in NASCAR racing. She has earned eight wins, 17 top-three finishes and nine top-five finishes across 36 races in 2022. Emily commented, “I am so thankful to be apart of WWEX Racing and I am looking forward to growing together as a team. We are one team, one family, always moving forward.” We wish Emily continued success as she pursues her dreams on the track!
Interested in a Summer College Tour?
The College Counseling Office is hoping to continue the annual College Tour this summer! As we begin planning, it is important for us to know how many students are interested. Any rising sophomore, junior, or senior may sign up with precedence given to rising juniors and seniors.
We will go to Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana colleges and universities June 4 -10 (Sunday - Friday). We plan to visit or tour at least 10 different institutions. We estimate the cost to be approximately $850, depending on the number of students, which includes bus, hotel, daily breakfasts, and most meals. A deposit of $400 will be required by March 24, 2023.
More information will be forthcoming, but for now we really just need to know how many students are interested. Talk with your student and see if this is an opportunity he/she would like to attend.
We will be hosting an interest/information meeting NEXT Wednesday, March 1 at 6 p.m. in the Commons. Please RSVP with Ms. Phillips at cphillips@gwa.com or contact Mr. Terrell at jterrell@gwa.com if you are interested but unable to attend the meeting.
Playoffs Begin!

Region Champs
Both GWA equestrian teams (upper and middle/lower school) are region champs following last weekend's competition! This is a GWA first! They will proceed to Zone Four Finals (in Conyers) in March to compete against riders from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Tennessee. In addition to the teams’ wins - Taylor Jesel, Hailey Wudtke and Mary Ann Jones qualified individually. Congratulations, GWA riders!
