November at John Haley
November, 2022
Message from Mrs. Bravo, Principal
The month of November is one of my favorite times of the year. I love Thanksgiving Holiday — family, friends, and food. I am thankful for such caring community, and specifically for you giving us your children to be part of our school. John Haley is a great place to learn and I am so excited that your children are part of it!
Our mission at John Haley is to ensure that all students learn at a high level to reach their full potential. We take this mission seriously and our teachers are working daily to adjust for the individual needs of our students. Teachers meet throughout the week and analyze student learning data with their colleagues so that we can make the best decisions for what our students need. We also regularly talk about our students’ social/emotional needs as we believe in educating the whole child, and work hard to have an environment in which all kids are successful. At John Haley, we will continue to ensure that every student is given the opportunity to reach their potential.
We hope that you take the time to talk to your children about the exciting things that they are learning each day. We encourage you to spend a few minutes each day asking them some of the following questions: How did you contribute to the learning today? What challenges did you accept today? What questions did you ask? What feedback did you receive today? What did you do with it? How did you show that you weren’t going to give up? How were you kind today? How were you safe today? How were you responsible today?
Obviously, you probably won’t want to ask all of these questions every day, but over the course of a week, I would challenge you to try and ask most of these questions. These questions are the key to what successful learners do.
Thank you to all the parents that participated in our Literacy Night and parent-teacher conferences. Research indicates that when parents and teachers work together, children perform better academically. If you haven't had time to visit with a teacher yet, please make contact soon.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Bravo
Temperature changing
It is important that parents check each morning to make sure children are dressed suitably for the weather. Children can wear a sweatshirt or light jacket in the morning.
Excellent Attendance
Excellent Attendance-Being in school every day means your child won’t miss out on learning in school. Try to schedule appointments and family trips outside of school hours.
Capturing Kids' Hearts: A Closer Look at Teamwork
What is Teamwork?
Teamwork is the ability to work in unity with others towards a common goal. For us to learn how to become team players, it is important that we learn to listen, encourage our peers, and allow and invite others to contribute their talents and skills.
Why focus on Teamwork?
- Teamwork improves communication: Teamwork helps us improves our verbal and non-verbal communication skills, conveying that we care and a relevant message.
- Teamwork builds interpersonal awareness: Growing a great team requires us to first build strong relationships through better understanding ourselves and others.
- Teamwork celebrates diversity. Teamwork thrives from diverse ideas that come from a mixture of different genders, cultures, expertise, experience, and problem-solving approaches.
Teamwork in Action:
- Call them a team, not a class or group. A group consists of many different people. A team, however, has a common purpose and a shared responsibility for success.
- Require teams to set expectations for and manage their own behavior. Do not tell teams what type of behavior is expected -- let them decide for themselves with a Social Contract.
- Teach and encourage affirmations. Giving affirmations helps connect the team and builds trust, promotes engagement, and boosts a positive culture.
