#HispanicHeritageMonth2022

7th Edition: October 2 - October 8
Welcome to October
Ranger Families,
Welcome to October, a month where we raise awareness of important issues such as Breast Cancer, celebrate the history and culture of the Hispanic/Latinx community, and assess student attendance and academic performance.
Our staff is hard at work creating learning experiences that will challenge and engage our students. We have reached the end of the grading period, which is always stressful for everyone. As you review your grades online via Skyward, I recommend maintaining open lines of communication with teachers to assist your students and their needs better. We must keep our excellent performance as we refocus on academics, positive behavior, and pride!
In closing, remember that relationships are the key things that bring significant change! There is power in having authentic conversations with parents and teachers, and when students have advocates, they will exceed expectations. The world prospers when people pull together. We are the change that we wish to see at B.F. Terry!

Average Daily Attendance
Parents, guardians, and scholars!
Thank you for your responsiveness to our attendance process. As a result, we have experienced an increase in our daily average for this week! Great job.
While we are experiencing improvement, we still have much work to-do and here’s how you can help.
- Take advantage of our doors opening at 7:40am to receive scholars. The tardy bell to first period rings at 8:15am. Please ensure to have your scholar to school in plenty of time to arrive on-time.
- If you are receiving a call regarding attendance, your scholar has been marked absent for that period. Please continue to inquire! Errors can be fixed and we want them fixed, but we need your help.
- Remember – excused and unexcused absences impact the 90% rule. Your scholar cannot miss more than 9 school days in any class or they risk not earning credit for the class. Please, come to school daily. This is directly tied to student achievement!
When a student is absent from school due to personal illness, the student upon return, or within 5 days of returning to school, must submit a note signed by a parent giving the date(s) and describing the reason for the absence. Parent notes may be sent by email but must come from a parent’s verified email account. The note or email must be sent to the campus attendance clerk. Up to 5 personal illness notes per school year will be accepted for an excused absence. If this number is exceeded, then all additional absences will be referred to the Campus Attendance Review Committee.
If a student is absent 5 consecutive school days or more, a doctor’s note is required within 5 days of the student’s return to school for the absence to be excused.
Let’s continue to improve by working together as a school community.
Hispanic Heritage Month Celebrations
National Hispanic Heritage Month 2022
We are excited to kick off Hispanic Heritage Month celebration which is celebrated nationally from September 15 through October 15.
Hispanic Heritage Month exists to celebrate the histories, cultures, and contributions of Hispanic Americans whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America. We celebrate those who have contributed to our shared history and championed and inspired all to achieve success.
We are still seeking input from our students, families, and staff to offer ideas on potential programs and celebrations to honor Latinx and Hispanic Culture. Please email Principal Roberson if you would like to offer ideas. (brian.roberson@lcisd.org)
Chief Carr Returns to Ranger Nation
Principal Roberson was proud to welcome and personally congratulate one of B. F. Terry High School’s finest, Chief Arika Carr, class of 1999, who recently became the first Black woman chief in Fort Bend County history when she was sworn in to lead the Arcola Police Department. Chief Carr joined us for morning duty to patrol the halls she once walked as a student. #RedNationBacksTheBlue

- Did you know that if you are found in possession of these items, you will be suspended, and can receive an automatic placement to the Alternative Learning Center, and have felony charges filed with the District Attorney's Office?

Upcoming Assessment Information
PSAT/NMSQT Testing Information
Students,
On Wednesday, October 12, 2022, Terry students will be in testing mode. 9th graders will be taking the PSAT 8/9, while 10th and 11th graders will be taking the PSAT/NMSQT. These tests are part of the college readiness testing track. Students will receive a score report through their College Board accounts in early December showing academic areas of strength and areas needing improvement. The goal of these tests is to prepare for the SAT which will be taken in the spring of their junior year. It is important to meet college benchmark on the SAT, as that says students are ready for college (even if they are not planning on attending college). Meeting college benchmark says that students are ready for whatever career path they choose after high school. Also, if students meet benchmark on the SAT, then they will not need to take the TSIA2 test, which is a college placement test that our seniors take for entrance into a junior college. We want all our students to be ready for life after high school, and that starts with the PSAT.
Also, on October 12th, all seniors will be taking the TSIA2. The goal for our seniors is to prepare for life after high school, whether it is college or career.
All students should eat a good breakfast and bring a snack or drink. Food and drink can only be consumed during breaks in testing, not during the timed portions of the PSAT. Lunches will be delayed that day, so please plan accordingly.
If you have any questions, you can contact Tracie Pryor, Testing Coordinator, at tpryor@lcisd.org, or your student’s counselor.
9 Reasons why the PSAT Matters
Most students know about the SAT and work hard to prepare for it. This week many students will take the Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test or PSAT/ NMSQT test. Some of you may be wondering why this test is important.
Here are nine reasons to take the PSAT and why it matters to do well:
- The PSAT is the best practice for the SAT. It’s a standardized test made by the College Board, the same company that creates the SAT, and it tests the same three subjects as the SAT: critical reading, math problem-solving, and writing. The kinds of questions and the directions are almost exactly the same as the SAT.
- Students get to experience sitting down for a two to three hour test with few breaks. For many, it’s an eye-opener. The real SAT is about an hour and a half longer than the PSAT.
- PSAT scores indicate how a student might do on each section on the SAT. Using the test results, students can then focus their test review on the areas and types of questions they need to improve most.
- Students and parents can use the scores as a gauge to see what kind of additional study aids or tutoring is needed. Consider poor results as an early warning signal that serious work may be needed to do well on the real SAT.
- By taking the PSAT, a student could become a National Merit Scholar. This is a highly prestigious recognition. To participate in the National Merit Scholarship Program, a student needs to score above a certain percentile on the test. The National Merit Scholarship program only accepts scores from the junior year.
- Some 8,600 National Merit Scholarships will be awarded in 2022; these awards will have a combined value of more than $41 million. Different types of scholarships will be offered.
- After taking the PSAT, a number of colleges will send brochures and other college-related mail. It’s a good chance to see how schools distinguish themselves and which ones are showing interest.
- PSAT scores are not reported to colleges. Students can take the PSAT and not worry that their score will hurt their chances of admission.
- Students can see how their performance on the SAT might compare with that of other students throughout the country. This may boost self-esteem/ confidence or be a good dose of reality/ kick in the pants. Almost all high school students take the PSAT during their junior year. Some students take the PSAT as sophomores and even freshmen to get the feel for the test.
To all students: Good luck on the PSAT!
PSAT Calculator Information
Students in grades 8-11 will be given the opportunity to take PSAT 8/9 or PSAT/NMSQT October 11, 12, or 13.
Since the 11th PSAT/NMSQT test is used to qualify students as National Merit Scholars, all students are provided a graphing calculator to use on the test when allowed by test directions.
For students in grades 8, 9, and 10 use of a calculator is optional. Therefore, it is an individual choice if a student wants to bring a calculator from home, borrow one from the school, or not use a calculator at all.
For students bringing calculator from home, approved calculator models are listed in the websites below:
GRADE 10: Click here to view College Board's calculator policy for PSAT/NMSQT
GRADES 8 and 9: Click here to view College Board's calculator policy for PSAT 8/9
There will be a very limited supply of calculators available for students in grades 8, 9, and 10. Please let campus personnel know by October 3 if your child needs to reserve a school calculator.
Please contact the Campus Testing Coordinator at your student’s campus for more details or if you have any questions.

In Case You Missed It: Parent Night Presentation
Terry High School hosted Back to School Parent Night for families on August 11th.
The administrative and counseling teams shared important information for the upcoming school year.
No Outside Deliveries
Terry High School is a closed campus. Scholars must remain on campus from the start of school until the end of school. Scholars are not permitted to leave campus for lunch.
We will not permit scholars to receive outside lunch delivered from delivery services such as Uber Eats, Grub Hub, Door Dash, etc.
This is for the protection of all of our scholars. We cannot have fast food delivery drivers looking for scholar on campus. If food is delivered to campus, we will refuse to accept it.
We welcome you to come and eat lunch with your scholar. Please contact your scholar’s grade level administrator at least 24 hours in advance and ensure you are prepared with the proper identification to receive a visitor’s pass. You will need your ID or Driver’s License. Please only bring lunch for your scholar.
Lamar CISD Clear Bag Policy
As we gear up and prepare for this coming school year, don’t forget to add clear bags to your back-to-school shopping list if you intend on attending any event at Traylor Stadium or the Lamar CISD Natatorium.
LCISD Safety Overview & Standard Response Protocol
Lamar CISD constantly seeks to provide a circle of protection that generates safety and security in all schools and facilities. Controlled access to buildings, visitor registry, crisis communication, employees and first responders are all essential to that cause.
Looking to implement best practices for safety and security, Lamar CISD has introduced the Standard Response Protocol (SRP). Created by the Colorado-based I Love You Guys Foundation, this standard simplifies the district’s emergency response—making it a powerful, informative and efficient guide.
The SRP refers to five specific actions in the event of an emergency or crisis. Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, Shelter and Hold are the actions students and employees are trained to perform during an emergency. A brief synopsis of each action is below.
Secure – occurs when a threat or hazard is outside of the school building. Students will remain or return inside the building. Staff will help recover students and colleagues outside the building, take roll and increase their situational awareness.
Lockdown – occurs when a threat or hazard is inside the building. Students will stay quiet and out-of-sight. Staff will lock the classroom door, turn off lights, maintain silence and obscured visibility, take roll and wait for first responders to open the door.
Evacuate – occurs when students and staff must move to another location. Students will leave all but cell phones behind, form a single-file line, show hands and be prepared for changes. Staff will lead students to the evacuation location and take roll, if possible.
Shelter – occurs when the need for personal protection is necessary, such as during a tornado or biohazard situation. Students and staff will employ appropriate safety strategies. Teachers will also take roll to account for students.
Hold – occurs when there is a need for students to clear the hallways for issues, such a medical emergency. Students will remain in their classroom until they receive an “all clear” and classes will continue as they normally would.
This protocol helps us maintain a safe learning and working environment for all students and staff.
