A Message Mrs. Brownell, BCIT Literacy Supervisor
Dear School Community:
BCIT's goal is to help all students be successful readers and writers. The link between vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension is undeniable and is a vital part of all content learning. Because of a most generous donation by the BCIT Foundation, we will be offering an online vocabulary program next year to all grade 9 students at the Medford campus. We extend our gratitude to the foundation and look forward to our work together in helping all students grow as readers, writers, and thinkers.
Time spent reading independently is also important in developing literacy skills. Unfortunately, with the summer break often comes the ‘summer slide’. When students read less over the summer, they often lose important reading skills. Because BCIT is committed to supporting our students’ continued growth as readers, we are encouraging summer reading again this year. Each campus has developed a unique reading initiative to support students in this way.
Westampton campus will be kicking off the “One Book, One Grade” summer reading initiative. Each grade will be responsible for reading an assigned book to be used as a springboard for the first unit in English class. Please see the website for the specific titles per grade. Each book has an exciting storyline that students enjoy each year.
At the BCIT campus in Medford, we will be implementing the "One Book, One School" program. With the help of the National Honor Society, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens by Sean Covey will be celebrated throughout the school year. Please be sure to look for the most relevant edition, updated for the digital age. It is a great book to read together and can help facilitate important conversations with the teenagers in our lives.
“Today a reader, tomorrow a leader.” Margaret Fuller's quote summarizes the positive effect this book, and the reading experiences mentioned above, can have on our lives. Please join us now and this summer as we celebrate the importance of reading each and every day!

BCIT Adult Education Student Spotlight
Dear BCIT Community Members,
We are very proud of Angel Christian, a recent graduate of BCIT’s Adult Education Division’s Medical Assisting program on the Medford campus. Ms. Christian has earned the official title of Certified Medical Assistant.
Ms. Bell, her instructor, describes her as professional and exemplary. Ms. Christian’s clinical preceptor did not hesitate to express the similar sentiments from her performance in clinical, and this is why the decision to hire her upon completion of the course was an easy one. Ms. Christian recently took two exams through the National Healthcare Association (NHA); successfully passing both--the Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) and the Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA). Ms. Christian was excited to be working at the same facility where she performed her clinical experiences.
BCIT Adult Education Division is proud of Angel Christian and her accomplishments. Ms. Christian has proved that with hard work, you can change your career in less than a year!

Student Spotlight: Destiny Montgomery
Destiny Montgomery is a junior on our Westampton campus. Destiny lives with her family in Willingboro. She has two older siblings; her oldest sister lives in Philadelphia (29) and the other, an alum of BCIT Medford, is a Computer Science college student, (22). Her sister Emily influenced her to want to attend BCIT to receive a hands-on education.
Destiny played soccer for BCIT since Freshman year (JV), sophomore and junior year (V). Unfortunately, Destiny tore ACL her junior year; but she still helped the team as the Varsity Manager, assisting Mr. Lawrence and encouraging her teammates to succeed. Destiny did not let her injury discourage her from continuing to lead her team and contribute.
Destiny has been a member of FCCLA (Family Career Community Leaders of America) since her Freshman year. She was inducted as an FCCLA State Officer, VP of Leadership Development. Next year, she is a candidate for the FCCLA BCIT Chapter president. She has competed in Edison and Cherry Hill twice. This summer, she will compete in in Family and Consumer Sciences at the National Conference in San Diego, CA. She created a portfolio of her future job, FCS Teacher, and she won first place gold and a free trip to compete nationally. She is attending with seven from her chapter in early July. “There is a lot of work to prepare for the national conference in early July”, said Destiny, “I have to review my portfolio, make additions and perfect my presentation”.
When asked about her future plans, “I want to teach Early Childhood Education. I want to teach high school students to pursue a teaching degree.” Destiny plans to pursue her education at Montclair State University or Florida State University. Montclair is close to family, but FSU offers “Family and Consumer Sciences,” a.k.a. Home Economics, asa major.
When asked why she chose BCIT and how she would describe her experience here, Destiny remarked, “BCIT was a good choice for me. I am a hands-on learner. I learn by practicing what I’m learning and BCIT created that opportunity for me. Everything I am learning in my classes, I can see first-hand in our classroom. We create lesson plans and have the ability to implement the plans the following week with our students. It’s so fulfilling to see their excited faces when they learn something new! My creativity has grown so much in the past three years. The Teachers FCCLA, Mrs. Lindsay and Mrs. Cross have influenced me the most to pursue my field of choice and succeed in the FCCLA”.
Destiny described BCIT as a great experience. “You are able to explore your future career in high school. It gives you a great opportunity at a young age before college. It helps you to know what you want to do before it’s too late and you have to change your major. Plus, you get to meet other Burlington County kids from all over the county. I have so many friends!”

Lockheed Martin, an annual donor to the BCIT Foundation, will provide funding that will offset costs of a Robotics Club at Medford and STEM initiatives at both campuses.
Lockheed is the primary sponsor of the Medford Robotics Club, which has seen a steady increase in student involvement since forming in 2012. The $2,500 grant will be an important factor in the team’s ability to pay competition fees and replace consumable supplies including structural material, motors, wires and game elements.
A second grant will help both campuses establish an inventory of equipment from a company called littleBits. Those pieces can be used to create touch pads, build robots, design remote controls and create MP3 players – all tools that will help students meet Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) with added emphasis on science, technology, engineering and design. Medford will receive the bulk of the $4,000 grant to launch its littleBits-based initiative. Westampton acquired a supply of littleBits through a grant last year, and this Lockheed Martin grant will add more complex components to its collection. At both schools, the equipment will help teachers expand concepts beyond the career-focused courses and into the general curriculum. With littleBits, students can create customized doorbells, vending machines, flying objects, remote-controlled cars – almost anything they can imagine.
Lockheed Martin channels much of its grant-giving to STEM-based instruction, and the company has nearly tripled its donations to BCIT in the past four years.

The cast of "12 Angry Jurors" received 3 nominations at this year's Theatre Night Awards held last night at Montclair State University. The entire cast was nominated for Best Ensemble in a Drama, Jahmar Ortiz was nominated for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama and D'Ionna West was nominated for Best Lead Actress in a Drama. I am happy to report that D'Ionna West won Best Lead Actress for her performance in "12 Angry Jurors".

Southern Regional Competition Winners!
Two of our Culinary Arts students, Jackson Brown & Isaiah Sherrill, will move on to the state championships on April 16 as a result of their placement in the Southern Region competitions, held at GCIT on Sat., March 12th.

Engraved bricks can mark a memory, honor a loved one, or commemorate a special occasion. They are placed within existing walkways near the front entrances of either Medford or Westampton campus, reflecting the legacy of BCIT.
