Using Background Knowledge

This science of reading-based seminar focuses on how skilled readers utilize background knowledge to support comprehension and what to do if students lack it. Educators will learn ways to help students build and use their background knowledge to efficiently make inferences and synthesize text information. We will explore direct and indirect ways to help students strengthen their schema and vocabulary.

We will plan effective ways to level the playing field for our students who lack experiences and topical knowledge, as well as for those who are learning English as a new language.

1. Learn ways to build topical background knowledge in just 5 minutes a day!

2. Focus on analysis level thinking! Focus on building curiosity and helping students explore text sets on a wide range of age-appropriate topics.

3. Walk away with easy to implement instructional strategies that promote building and utilizing background knowledge to synthesize and make inferences.

4. Learn strategies for direct instruction to purposefully help students build and use their schema to make sense of all types of texts.

5. Utilize the 13 vocabulary mega-clusters (Hiebert) to select topics for expanding your students' knowledge of the world.

6. Discover how to incorporate building background as an intentional practice in every reading and content area lesson.

7. Leave the session with easy to implement strategies and activities that will grow your students' schema and deepen comprehension of what they read and view.

8. Discover reading resources, including multi-modal texts you can use immediately with your students

9. Be ready to help your students to assess their knowledge of the topic and ideas in a text and determine how to use that knowledge to comprehend the text or video.

Kelly Harmon is a national presenter & author who has more than 31 years of experience working with at-risk students. She presents on a wide range of topics including Literacy Instruction, Guided Math Instruction, RTI, technology, reading, writing, and strategies for highly effective teachers. Ms. Harmon works as an instructional coach for schools and districts across the United States. In addition to consulting, she works with the Bureau of Education and Research.
