Warrior Word - Spring Edition
WSD Department Updates: March & April
Welcome to the WSD Warrior Word Newsletter - Spring Edition
Spring is here, and just like nature surrounds our community, our WSD Staff and Students have been through many changes.
WSD is wrapping-up spring conferences, starting our school year's 4th quarter, celebrating awards and recognitions, kicking-off spring sports, and headed to enjoy spring break!
Our district has also been working very hard to inform our staff and community about the upcoming EP&O Levy Replacement on April 26, 2022. Levies are for learning and make up the difference between funding from the state and federal government and the actual cost of operating a school district to provide students with a well-rounded education.
This levy is not a new task, it is a renewal levy, and tax rates will not increase for four years. Not only does the Educational Programs & Operations Levy help fund various educational and operational programs and services vital to our student's success. It is also connected with a levy equalization, an apportionment provided by the state that helps property-poor districts like WSD. If WSD passes this levy, it will continue to receive over $3 million per year from Washington State over the next four years.
Please look at the flyers below and our Levy informational webpage for more details.
The EP&O levy is our community investment in our children.
Department Updates
Special Education Department
March 30th & 31st will be the dates for Child Find - Developmental Screening: This process is available at WSD for any child 3-5 years old who is not yet enrolled in Kindergarten. The purpose is to ensure that all of our children in our community are receiving the services necessary to be successful.
If you have a child who may need help, please call Fatima Barajas or Claudia Tapia at (509)932-4565 to make your appointment.
The Special Education Department was recently awarded the ADA Equal Access for $100,000, and this grant will fund automatic entry doors to all five school buildings.
We have also been selected by ESD 105 to be the recipients of the WOIS Grant (Workforce Professionals Center). This will give our transition students on IEPs ages 16-21 an opportunity to work with DVR to gain Pre-ETS and work-based learning opportunities. There will be a parent night on March 24 from 5:30-7:30 at WHS to discuss what the program looks like and how your child can qualify to receive these services.

The Wahluke School District is honored to recognize our teachers that have earned their National Board Certificates: John Ellsworth, Wahluke High School; Jan Bender and Laura Catlin, both of Morris Schott STEAM Elementary; Melissa Dixon and Kristen Erickson, both of Wahluke Jr. High, and Colleen Woods, Mattawa Elementary.
National Board Certification is the most widely respected professional certification program available in education and provides numerous benefits to teachers, students, and schools. It was designed to develop, retain, and recognize accomplished teachers, as well as generate ongoing improvement in schools nationwide.
National Board Certification is achieved by successfully completing a voluntary assessment program made of several components, designed to recognize effective and accomplished teachers who meet high standards based on what teachers should know and be able to do.
We are proud of what these teachers have accomplished in earning their National Board Certificate. This is a long and rigorous process. Congratulations!

First and foremost I want to give a HUGE shoutout to all of the staff who made our first go at ACCESS testing a success. The window officially closes on March 25th, but buildings had 90% of testing done well before that date. Next, stakeholders from across the state will convene in April to set the exit scores for our state. In mid-May we will have access to the scores online and by early-mid June we should have the paper copies to send home to parents with semester 2 report cards.
March 1st we had a district-wide Migrant PAC meeting where parents were deeply engaged with our strategic plan and connecting with each other after all this time apart. March 23rd there will be a Migrant night for parents of elementary school students at the WHS commons. We are looking forward to a fun time of math games with ESD 105. In April the WJH migrant program will be hosting La Chispa, a bilingual leadership event, for our students. We are excited to be back to offering these in-person events for students and families.
As a result of our program review, the M2 department will be conducting an evaluation of our English Language Development services across the district. We will have an event later this spring for parent input as well as sending out a survey to district staff and meeting with a group of stakeholders in person. If you would like to be a part of this team, please let Norma Ramirez know.

Intramural Sports
We finished open gym basketball and volleyball. Basketball was better than expected as 35-40 students would consistently show up for open gym. Volleyball was successful and 60 students got to learn the game.
One problem we encountered was not being able to have more students participate in volleyball because of gym space. We held our volleyball at ME.
We are now starting dodgeball and have two sessions for 45 students participating. The kids are enjoying coming in and playing games the entire time rather taking time learning.
They are running around laughing and having a good time. We will be starting T-Ball, baseball, softball after spring break. We want to run this session until school gets out.

Wahluke Athletics
Howdy Y'all!
As seasons and weather started to change from Fall to Winter so have athletics here at Wahluke School District! The Wahluke Junior High (WJH) basketball season concluded right before winter break began, and they had a tremendous season for all four (4) teams! The coaches did an excellent job of coaching up the student-athletes with mixing in a lot of competitiveness and fun! The other two sports that have started for WJHS after winter break were Girls Basketball and Co-Ed Wrestling. Although no competitions have occurred yet, the numbers for the girls basketball team is a whopping 64 girls (4 teams) and 17 co-ed wrestlers. First competitions will begin in the upcoming weeks for both programs!
As for the Wahluke High School (WHS) winter athletics each sport is now in the thick of league play. Although there have been some challenges due to the postponement and rescheduling of games due to COVID-19 precautions, weather, and transportation as well the season is still rolling along slowly and steadily! There are a total of five (5) programs in winter sports this year! Cheer (8 student-athletes), Girls Basketball (32 student-athletes & 3 teams), Boys Basketball (36 student-athletes & 3 teams), Girls Wrestling (13 student-athletes) and Boys Wrestling (25 student-athletes). There have been so many positives within each program as the season has gone on and truly is a testament to our coaches who put in countless amount of hours and hard work to see the success in our student-athletes, but also our student-athlete's drive and passion for all the sports they truly do care and love to participate in! Below are just a few photos of the season thus far!
Next up is High School spring athletics starting up on Monday, February 28th 2022 and registrations for those sports (Baseball, Golf, Boys Soccer, Tennis, Track & Field, and Softball). Junior high sports will start on Monday, March 28th 2022 and their registration will open up for those sports (Baseball, Boys Soccer, Softball and Track & Field) on Monday, February 28th 2022.

Safety and Security Department
Welcome to SPRING! A lot is happening here at Wahluke School District. As Safety and Security department we are still staying busy. We completed our facility walkthrough in order to place our security cameras throughout our campus. Hopefully this will help in monitoring our campus a little easier and will replace a very old system and bring us up to speed with better technology.
Our Event Staff goes from Winter sports events to Spring events. They will be busy with Track, Baseball,Softball and Soccer. Event Staff has gone through a couple trainings and now will go through the Right Response training held after hours at the WHS Library. The Safety and Security Department will partner with the Washington State Penitentiary in order to work on our beatification project. We will be taking down all our old signs from around the campus and WSP will remake them in their sign shop.
The Safety and Security Department will also hold their first Safety and Wellness night for parents to be held at WHS commons.

Library Information and Literacy Program
April is School Library Month. We are excited to spend the month highlighting the amazing work happening in all our libraries and start the next step in the process of updating all of the libraries in our district.
As of this month, all of our new books have arrived and they are ready to go on the shelves. We are finishing up our work weeding the elementary libraries, and ordered our genre stickers to officially transition all our libraries into genrefied libraries.
The task of completely overhauling the Junior High library is schedule to start during Spring Break. The plan is to weed and box up the old books and put all of the new books on the shelves by the time students return. If we are successful students will be able to start checking out books from the library for the first time in over five years. The Junior High Library Design committee have met multiple times to discuss our plans change the layout and look of the library. We are first looking to paint the library, and we’ve narrowed it down to four palette choices. The final four choices will send those choices out to all staff and students to get their opinion.
The C3 Hub is planning a Maker night event on April 27th. Students will have the opportunity to try out various materials in the library’s maker-space to celebrate the end of this year’s testing season. We’ll be partnering with the NCW libraries to host this night.

We have put in some work on our baseball and softball fields this spring getting them into shape and have plans to make them even better this summer. The junior high baseball field has been redone and now is set up for junior high and high school games. It will require some more work over time but it's playable for this spring.
We have a long list of things to accomplish over spring break which include finishing our playground material and painting in our parking lots. Looking forward to spring and eventually summer.

Leprechaun Traps: Thank you to the parents and students of our TK - 2 grade classrooms for making leprechaun traps for St. Patrick’s Day! We had 101 traps submitted and on display in the library. We are really surprised that we did not catch a leprechaun this week with so many creative traps in our building…maybe next year
WIDA Access Assessment: SME is in the final stage of completing the WIDA ACCESS assessment for Kinder - 5th grade students. This is an English Language Proficiency Test for Migrant students (students whose main language at home is Spanish). They continue to take this assessment every year until they reach a proficient level. Once they receive a proficient score they are no longer required to take the assessment. The assessment includes the areas of reading, listening, speaking, and writing.
Parent/Teacher Conferences: Teachers will be contacting you to arrange the date and time of your conference. March 30 & 31 evening conferences from 3:45-7:15 PM and April 1 from 7:30-11:00 AM. SME student schedule for March 30-April 1: 11:30 AM -12:15 PM lunch and recess; 12:15-3:00 PM class time. We are looking forward to seeing you during the conference week!
SME Music Update: With a return to school for all students, music classes resumed their normal rhythms at Saddle Mountain Elementary (SME). Since the beginning of December, one could hear the cacophony of sounds emanating from the 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students’ recorders. As the months have progressed, the students have been working to master the different notes and playing together. With songs like “Walk Like a Mummy, “AAA,” and “Glue Blues” students have been able to solidify their knowledge of the different notes while learning about different styles of music. Students have also had the opportunity to participate in Recorder Karate and Recorder Karate 2 as a supplement to regular instruction. Of the 241 students in grades 3-5, 78 students have attempted their first belt by playing “Hot Cross Buns.” Five students have mastered the 9 initial songs in Recorder Karate and gone on to the 9 additional songs in Recorder Karate 2. One student has completed all 18 songs and has begun learning additional repertoire to perform for assemblies. Students at SME are demonstrating safe behaviors with their recorders, cleaning them after use and following expectations about storing and using the instruments. Students are respectful of the collective efforts involved in music performance by taking responsibility for learning new information, practicing difficult concepts, and persisting. Students are also demonstrating responsibility by bringing their instruments daily to class, practicing at home, and keeping track of their music. Despite the unique challenges posed by COVID over the last two years, SME students are persistent in following the Warrior Code and continuing to learn and grow.
Saddle Mountain Elementary will be hosting a math family night for students and parents on Thursday, April 14 from 5:00-7:00 PM. There will be a variety of grade level math games and activities offered. More information will be given to parents and students as the event is finalized.
Robotics: Saddle Mountain Elementary had all eight 21st Century VEX IQ Competitive Robotics teams qualify for last Saturday's Washington State Elementary VEX IQ Robotics Championship Tournament in Ellensburg at Mt Stuart Elementary School.
Teamwork Alliance (2 teams work together to a combined score): Here are the results from the 32 teams that were represented. Saddle Mountain Elementary had 4 of the 8 teams make the finals in the Teamwork Alliance.
What is next? We will be reflecting on missed opportunities and how to correct them. We have already acknowledged that the teams that out scored us were using robots that could "pitch-in the high goal" and so we will be rebuilding robots to reflect this while journaling the process.
We will scrimmage with Morris Schott sometime in May before the World VEX IQ tournament on May 10. At the World tournament the new 2022-23 VEX IQ Game will be released and we will begin the Engineering Design Process again.
Planning: We will begin planning for the Summer JumpStart and 2022-23 season for League. Ellensburg and Sunnyside have expressed interest.
Wahluke Proud: We are very proud of our boys and girls teams! The students are enthusiastic to continue the journey and we were very well represented by parents making the trip to Ellensburg.
Thank you for your support in making this happen!
