Good Things! (This is what I send out to parents)
Last week was a great week at HJH! We celebrated our A and A/B honor roll students at lunch on Thursday and we had our 2nd Bulldog Club celebration on Friday during WIN! Our students had a great week on campus and have been working hard as we are back into the full swing of school!
Extracurricular Highlights:
Our basketball teams picked up where they left off with action against Italy last week!
JH Boys White fell to Italy in a very competitive game 16 - 21
JH Boys Red beat Italy 43 - 19
JH Girls B defeated Italy
JH Girls 7A defeated Italy
Social Emotional Highlights:
Our SEL theme for the past week was teaching about positive self talk and positive affirmations. This week, we challenged our students to find ways to speak positively themselves and others. Students were asked to share ways that they could incorporate positivity into their daily routines.
Curriculum & Instruction Highlights:
This past week was filled with wonderful classroom instruction from our staff and great performances in the classroom from our students. During my instructional walks, I was blown away by the quality of instruction and student performance in the classrooms!
During my visit to Mrs. Emeyabbi's classroom this week, I witnessed our students using instructional language as they were identifying the different parts of a mathematical equation. Instructional language is language that is often unfamiliar to learners as they begin to learn certain concepts. The importance of using this language is so that students can understand the context of how the vocabulary is used in action in the classroom. For example, students in Mrs. Emeyabbi's classroom where using terms such as coefficient and variable to identify the different elements of the equations that they are working on. This is not an easy thing to do in Math instruction and it takes hard work from both staff and students. Kudos to Mrs. Emeyabbi and her students for working hard to achieve at high levels!
Another cool thing that I was able to witness was in Mr. Batla's math classroom. Mr. Batla planned a highly engaging activity this week in the form of a scavenger hunt! Students were challenged to unlock a puzzle using directions that they got from solving equations positioned around the room. Students had to complete each equation correctly in order to solve the puzzle. I walked in at the end of the lesson and the students were excited, to say the least! Mr. Batla ended the lesson with a prize drawing that he has incorporated for students who take on enrichment challenges through our math program, Mathia! Math can sometimes be a monotonous experience for students, but this lesson was a grand slam and had our students engaged from the start to the finish! Big kudos to Mr. Batla and his students for being able to bring such an amazing experience to the Math classroom!
