Anne Arundel County 4-H Happenings

June 2022

Hello 4-H Families

June: Thriving Youth through Positive Youth Development (PYD)

Youth programs that are intentionally planned and implemented with a rich developmental context enable youth to thrive (Arnold & Gagnon, 2019). From January – April we touched on the developmental context, the “Soil”, of all 4-H programming: Spark, Relationships, Belonging, and Engagement. If we incorporate them, youth will thrive. 4-H focuses on seven indicators of thriving youth. From May through November, we’ll discover each indicator. After an overview of each, we would love for youth and volunteers to share how they utilized/participated in an action to help youth prosper.

Indicator 2: Growth Mindset - cultivating an understanding that one’s abilities can be developed/improved; emphasize one’s effort in learning over innate ability. When one adapts a growth mindset, they develop a love of learning and become resilient to failure.

Strategies:

  • Normalize struggle – struggling with something new is part of learning, reinforce this and focus on one positive accomplishment through the frustration. Then discuss/practice, resilience. (cite)
  • Demonstrate mistakes and celebrate correction – youth can share a hardship, what they learned from the situation, and a strategy they used to overcome/make better. (cite)
  • Praise questions – asking questions demonstrates interest, curiosity, and a desire to understand. (cite)
  • Time to reflect – ensure there’s time to think about the activity and pinpoint an accomplishment. Use the 4-H Life Skills Wheel to reflect on growth.

In utilizing these strategies, we encourage youth to recognize that they can grow their abilities. This emphasizes hard work and grit and demonstrates that goals can be achieved when we work together.

Youth and adults can alter our mindset. Tell our office about your experiences with Growth Mindset, we’ll share in the next newsletter.

Regards,

Gretchen

Students will explore the relationships between agriculture, the environment, and their health through engaging hands-on activities. In our first lesson, we will learn about the varied uses of animal byproducts or coproducts and identify common items made from byproducts. From there we will make homemade glue from milk. In our second lesson, we will learn about soil as a resource (components, uses, and renewability), compare and contrast samples of different soils, and then create a soil profile by letting a mixture of soil and water settle. And in our last lesson, we'll discuss the benefits of locally grown food by simulating a farmers market (with vendors, chefs and farmers) and using MyPlate dietary guidelines to create a balanced meal.

Kinder Farm Park - Meet the Kids

Kinder Farm Park 4-H Livestock Club and Friends of Kinder Farm Park Livestock Program teamed up to present Meet the Kids on Sunday, May 15, 2022, 12 - 4 p.m.🐐🐑🐥🐇

Youth shared information about their animals and hosted fun children's activities.

Using last month's 'Thrive, Youth Development Model', potential members indicated their ability to thrive by conducting demonstrations and interacting/speaking to the public. Risk taking can often be a challenge that, through effort and practice, can help youth thrive in future adult and life experiences.

Linthicum 4-H Hi-Riders Club - Open House

On Wednesday, May 18th, the Linthicum 4-H Hi-Riders hosted an Open House on the site of the UME-AAC/Dairy Farm property to introduce potential new members to 4-H and their program. After introductions and some ice breakers, youth enjoyed playing 'What's in the box?' (boxes filled with horse items bits, brushes, hay...), crafted a unique horse shoe picture frame, and then labeled the parts of a horse - on an actual horse!! 🐴

Using last month's 'Thrive, Youth Development Model', potential members indicated their ability to thrive in their willingness to challenge themselves to explore new areas/learn new things, as well as supported creativity through crafting. Trail Blazers Club - Butterflies & Gardening with 4-H

Article by Senior Trail Blazer 4-H Club Member Joelie Garcia:

On Saturday, May 14, The Trail Blazers Club put on their rain boots and headed down to Kinder Farm Park, in Anne Arundel County, to work on their new Pollinator Garden. The Trail Blazers were excited by the partnership with Kinder Farm and eager to put their gardening skills to work. These pollinator gardens have unique plants meant to attract swallowtail butterflies, monarch butterflies, hummingbirds, honey bees, and other Maryland pollinators. Club leader Rebecca Garcia comments, “I think the Pollinator Garden partnership is a great opportunity for our club members to learn more about gardening and pollinators and to have an opportunity to do community service projects, which is something they weren’t able to do during the pandemic.” This past fall, the Trail Blazers adopted four garden beds and planted perennial flowers. This time, they returned to weed the beds, restore the perennials, and plant milkweeds, black-eyed susans, mammoth sunflowers, a butterfly bush, and other plants.

This isn’t the first time the Trail Blazers have worked with pollinator plants. Last year, the club grew their own milkweed plants to attract monarch caterpillars and raise them into butterflies. Trail Blazer Gracie Williamson spoke about the club’s butterfly project, “It was really fun taking care of the caterpillars and letting them crawl on your hands. They might go extinct and many of them can be hurt by people or other predators, so we can save them by taking care of them so they can grow up into butterflies. I am excited to take care of more Monarch Butterflies this year!” This promises to be an engaging project for years to come.

Using last month's 'Thrive, Youth Development Model', members indicated their ability to thrive by supporting curiosity and self exploration, a key component in being open to challenge and discovery! Thank you Joelie for your insightful article!

*** Share your club experiences with us and we'll include your event in our next newsletter! ***

Maryland Horse Equine Standards Examiners Needed

*Effective January 1, 2020, the Maryland 4-H Horsemanship Standards program is no longer in use. The program is replaced with the NEW Maryland 4-H Equine Showmanship and Equitation Standards program.

The Maryland 4-H Equine Showmanship and Equitation Standards are designed to help 4-H members progressively develop horsemanship skills throughout their Maryland 4-H Horse Project participation. The Standards have been developed to foster learning for individuals who may or may not have access to horses regularly and for those who ride English or Western disciplines.

The Maryland 4-H Equine Showmanship and Equitation Standards are divided into Knowledge and Handling/Riding components in Four (4) Tiers. The Knowledge Tiers are designed to help members develop proper horse management and husbandry skills, emphasizing horse safety, care, and riding. Completion of the Knowledge Tiers does not require the use of a live animal by the 4-H member. The Handling/Riding Tiers encourage members to become safe, effective, and confident riders with a sound knowledge of equipment and tack. 4-H members must have access to a horse by owning, leasing, borrowing, or sharing a horse to participate in the Handling/Riding Tiers. Completion of Tiers is required for participation in the Maryland State Fair 4-H Horse Show and most Maryland County 4-H Horse Shows.

Are you interested in becoming an Equine Showmanship & Equitation Examiner?

To be an approved Maryland 4-H Equine Showmanship & Equitation Standards Examiner, individuals MUST be a certified UME Volunteer. Individuals must complete the required training sessions and pass the required exams (80% or above)*. Training sessions will be conducted using various methods which may include webinars, online, and face-to-face sessions. Examiner tests will be completed online. Examiner tests may be taken as open-book tests. At no time may any individual taking this test receive assistance from another individual.

NOTE: All previous Maryland 4-H Horsemanship Standards Examiners must participate in a NEW Program Orientation session and pass an exam about the new program.

The invasive Spotted Lanternfly

Spotted lanternfly, Lycorma delicatula White, otherwise known by the acronym, SLF; is a leafhopper insect native to southeast Asia, China, and India. It was discovered in the United States sometime around 2013-2014 in Brooks County, Pennsylvania. It has since spread from Pennsylvania to encompass the entire Mid Atlantic region. It was discovered in Maryland in 2018. Spotted lanternfly spreads primarily along human transportation pathways. The insects are extremely proficient at hitching rides to new territory. Rail and trucking in particular represent high risk pathways. Spotted lanternfly is a pest of over 70 plant species in North America. Its primary plant host is the tree of heaven, Ailanthus altissima. Tree of heaven is itself an invasive species from east Asia. Lanternfly also has several preferred secondary hosts including grape, black walnut, silver maple, red maple, eastern white pine, and willow. Of concern to the Maryland Department of Agriculture is lanternfly's tendency to feed on vineyard, orchard, and nursery products. The potential exists for lanternfly to have a serious impact on the sustainability and growth of the state's agro-industry. Thus, the MD Dept. of Agriculture, in cooperation with other state and federal agencies, has embarked on a suppression program to try and slow the spread of spotted lanternfly. The program involves proactive surveys, insecticidal treatments, and public outreach. The Dept. of Agriculture hopes that by arming the public with knowledge of the spotted lanternfly and by targeting high risk properties, it can reduce or stop the transmission of spotted lanternfly to new areas and reduce the insect's population in its existing range. For more information, please contact Kenton Sumpter at kenton.sumpter@maryland.gov.
