SHES Weekly Update

Good Afternoon SHES Families!

We had another fantastic week at Shadow! Laughter and learning were around every corner. We also got to announce our Classified and Certificated Employees of the year! Congratulations go out to Mr. Roy and Maestra Weinberg.

Mr. Roy is infamously known out on the playground at Shadow. He unofficially takes the lead of the Campus Safety Assistant program by training new hires and giving suggestions to the other group assistants. His years of experience are shown daily in his expert dealings with the students. He loves playing with them, throwing the football, and shooting hoops. Mr. Roy is a prime example of any recipient of this award and goes above and beyond daily.

Maestra Weinberg consistently makes all students feel welcome and heard at SHES. Her goal is to provide her fifth-grade students with the best education possible. Whether coming to school at 7 am and leaving at 5 pm every day, creating engaging Spanish activities and assignments, or connecting with students and building positive relationships with them. Maestra Weinberg's love and belief in her student's abilities is contagious!

Please help me in congratulating these two in the coming weeks!

We will be celebrating Valentine's Day this Friday, February 11, as Monday, February 14, is Lincoln's birthday, and there will be no school. Please look at your weekly teacher communication for further details.

The grading period for trimester two is wrapping up. Please check your child's Google Classroom to see any outstanding assignments due.

We will be offering three different COVID testing sites this week. The Monday testing site at Joan MacQueen Middle will offer the saliva COVID test and Wednesday and Friday at Shadow Hills Elementary will offer the nasal swab COVID test. All sites are open to the general public.

We understand that families have many life challenges to juggle. As a District, we are working on supporting the whole child's development. This means we focus on a student's academic, behavioral, and social-emotional development. You might be receiving a letter in the coming week as a result of the school's administrative team reviewing your child's attendance records and noticing your child is considered truant due to the number of unexcused absences and/or unexcused tardies (grater than 30 min) accrued this year.

If your child is missing school for any reason, we have Independent Study Contracts available for your child to complete. Once completed and turned in, your absences will be corrected and will not be an outstanding absence. We are asking that parents complete the electronic signature package as soon as they can do so and then return the completed work as soon as their child returns to school. I appreciate your support!

Please send a water bottle with your child to school daily. We have touchless refill stations on campus for them to use, but they need a bottle of their own. The bottle can be a plastic water bottle that they can refill. I appreciate your support as SHES works towards eliminating waste on our campus. Unfortunately, we have also run out of our water bottle supply. If anyone is willing and able to donate to the school, we'd greatly appreciate it.

Our school is participating in the District-wide No Place For Hate Project. No Place For Hate is designed to engage our students and staff in dialogue and active learning on bias, bullying, inclusion, and friendship. For our second project, we will be focusing on kindness, and this project will take place in February. We will be reading a school-wide story about jelly donuts and creating our jelly donuts complete with "sprinkles of kindness." We also will be having classroom discussions on how we can spread kindness, be inclusive, and be an ally to others. This will also roll into our school-wide reading buddies program starting in the Spring, where we will be pairing older and younger students together to read.
