New 2023-2024 Academic Calendar

The Killeen ISD Board of Trustees approved a new academic calendar for the 2023-2024 school year that now includes a fall break, October 9-13, 2023, for students and staff. The first and last day of school do not change and students will meet the required number of instructional minutes.
The Board of Trustees feel the newly added fall break will serve as a recruitment tool as the district prepares for the March 4, 2023, job fair at Harker Heights High School.
The new fall break will be very similar to Spring Break. UIL games and practices will still continue and Central Texas College students will be transported and be required to engage in college classes as scheduled.
KISD employees were surveyed about the alternate calendar prior to the Board of Trustees taking action; 79% of employees voted in favor of adding the fall break.
The new calendar does not negatively impact employee pay, in fact KISD employees will work fewer days and their pay will remain whole.
In fact, the new calendar will allow all employee duty calendars to be reduced by four days without reducing pay. Human Resources will publish the Duty Calendar for the 2023-2024 school year this Spring.
The new calendar changes are outlined below:
- Changes four professional development/student holiday days to required school days.
- Friday, September 1, 2023
- Friday, February 16, 2024
- Monday, March 18, 2024
- Monday, April 1, 2024 (changes to holiday)
- Moves the October Professional Development day from Monday, October 16, 2023, to Friday, October 6, 2023.
- Adds the week of October 9-13, 2023 as a fall break.
- Changes Thursday, December 21, 2023, to a full school day and adds Friday, December 22, 2023, as a student an early release day.
- Adds Monday, April 1, 2024, as a student/staff holiday.
- The alternate calendar would include 1.5 days banked for potential bad weather make up days.
KISD's Original High School Dedicates New Space
Killeen ISD’s original high school is brand new again.
Culminating an $85.95 million addition and renovation project that spanned more than four years, the community on Friday dedicated the new Killeen High School.
School district and campus leaders described the massive 20-phase update that touched every corner of the sprawling 400,358-square-foot building.
While praising the sparkling, new learning spaces, Killeen High School Principal Kara Trevino, former Principal Corbett Lawler and Board President and former KHS student Brett Williams were sure to point out what never changes at the beloved school.
“If you look back at old yearbooks, you can see the pride the students and staff possessed, which still rings true today,” said Williams, a 1992 graduate. “Roo Pride is justified.” Read More Here
