Food Drive
SMS student council members are organizing a canned food drive from December 1st through December 15th. Students are encouraged to donate any non-perishable food item on those dates.
As an added bonus, certain items will count double on the following days:
December 4th - green day (all green food items will count double)
December 7th - canned fruit day
December 12th - can opener day
December 15th - bean day
The grade that brings the most items during the food drive will earn 15 WARRIOR points for their teams.
Therapy Dog
Scottsburg Middle School is excited to welcome Sullivan Chicken Nugget, also known as Sully, to our SMS school team starting on December 7th, 2023. Students may be in contact with him throughout the school year under the supervision of our therapy dog team. He is hypoallergenic and is up to date on all necessary vaccinations/certifications.
Therapy dogs provide many benefits like offering comfort and non-judgmental love. They help children learn compassion, empathy, responsibility, respect, and self-discipline. Studies have proven that even a short amount of time with a dog can decrease levels of anxiety and increase emotional security. We are going to introduce him during an all- school assembly so students have a better understanding of his purpose and how to access him.
If you do not want your child to have access to the therapy dog, please contact the front office.
Choir Concert on Monday
The SMS and SHS choirs will be performing in McClain Hall at Scottsburg High School starting at 5:30 p.m. on Monday, December 4th.
The choirs are also hosting a cash-only bake sale before, during, and after the concert.
The Great History Challenge
On Thursday, December 7th, all SMS students will participate in The Great History Challenge, a national academic competition where students are asked trivia-style questions to demonstrate their history knowledge.
All questions come from the National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) curriculum standards and are cross-referenced with state standards. The questions will focus on Ancient World History, Modern World History, and American History.
All students will take the challenge in their Social Studies classroom, and each student will have an unique access code that they will use to play on the The Great History Challenge website.
We will receive the results for the entire school in early January. We are looking forward to taking the challenge and see who emerges as our 6th, 7th, and 8th grade top scorers!
Mobile Dentist
We are partnering with Smile Programs, the mobile dentists who offer in-school dental care.
Dental care is usually at no cost to you. All insurance is accepted, including Medicaid and CHIP. Students without insurance may be eligible for a grant. The Mobile Dentist program saves you time and provides a safe and comfortable place for your child to receive gentle dental care from licensed professionals.
Please sign up at mobiledentists.com or you may contact your school nurse with any questions.
