Nugget of Knowledge on our School History!
What's in a school name?
Schools were often named after prominent community members. Athens Drive High School caused quite a stir by leaving this school naming tradition. Wake County Schools and Raleigh City Schools merged in 1976. Athens Drive High School was built as a true community school with a vision to work together as a academic institution of excellence. Names of noteworthy community members were offered. However, the school name by location offered a neutral identifying name that did not show preferential treatment to either Wake County or Raleigh City systems. Since our school naming, the tradition of naming schools after a person started to reduce in popularity system-wide.
