Casa Grande Union High School District | September 2023
Superintendent Message
Happy Fall, Casa Grande Learning Community,
Every year in Arizona, we look forward to the statement "Happy Fall" as we know cooler days are ahead after a long summer of hot days. As we approach Homecoming for our two comprehensive high schools, I want to thank those in the community who have attended our schools and those currently attending. The families built these proud school traditions, and our families will be the driving force as we enhance these traditions.
When I started as superintendent in March, we hosted two town halls to get the pulse of our education community. We used the input to drive many of the changes we have made in our schools. It is time again to hear from the community and how we are doing. Therefore, I have scheduled two town halls this month to gather more feedback on how we are doing and what we can do to improve the quality of our educational experience. Here are the dates:
September 19 @ 7 PM @ Vista Grande Auditorium
September 25 @ 7 PM @ Casa Grande Union Auditorium.
Please join us for one of these town halls or both. We want to hear your voices as they are crucial in assessing the educational community's needs.
You can always reach out to me at jlavender@cguhsd.org.
I hope you have a fabulous September.
Jeff Lavender
Superintendent
Jeff Lavender Named Superintendent
(CGUHSD) On Tuesday, September 5, the Governing Board unanimously voted to remove the "Interim" label from Interim Superintendent Jeff Lavender's title. Initially entering into a 17-month agreement with Lavender and following a six-month evaluation, the Governing Board decided to make him the permanent Superintendent. Governing Board members expressed their gratitude and full support. The decision was met with a standing ovation from the Governing Board and packed room. Superintendent Lavender expressed his gratitude, “I want to thank the board for their confidence when they selected me in March and the support that they have given me. It has not been an easy journey but I’ve had all the support that I’ve needed from the board, from the excellent staff here and from the community.” Lavender outlined his vision to elevate the district's academic and athletic achievements stating, “I look forward to growing and working with all of you together to put this district back where we want it to be with high-performing high schools and students that are being recognized for their outstanding efforts, more championships, more awards for our bands and our special areas as well. I look forward to working with all of you and finishing my career here.” The Governing Board convenes monthly with their next meeting on Tuesday, September 26, one (1) week early due to the upcoming Fall Break.
Teena Daniels, Director of Student Success
(CGUHSD) Teena Daniels, Director of Student Success, was recognized as September's Employee of the Month at the Governing Board Meeting on Tuesday, September 5. According to her team members, “Ms. Daniels has come to our team and brought forth a professionalism and knowledge that is undeniable. She is organized and thorough. She is leading our team through the audit and spends endless hours researching best practices for our department. She always says we are in the business of serving our students and always has their best interest in mind. She listens to and respects teachers. She is an amazing teacher; shares her knowledge of technology and classroom teaching experiences with us. As our director, she is modeling how to compassionately hold others to high expectations. Her understanding of “go slow to move fast” has helped us to begin to see her vision and the methods that will ensure us a sustainable set of systems that should thrive long after her time as our director. Her willingness to learn in her new role is appreciated. She always asks questions if she doesn’t know something. She’s not afraid to tell you. We admire this in a director. She genuinely appreciates everyone’s knowledge around her. She compliments employees on their attributes to our department. Ms. Daniels is a breath of fresh air to Exceptional Student Services.”
Cynthia Soto, District Bookstore Manager
(CGUHSD) Congratulations to District Bookstore Manager Cynthia Soto who was presented with the Stepping Out From Behind The Counter Award. Cynthia did an amazing job floating between campuses over the summer to keep the bookstore operational for our students, families, and staff. During the busiest time of the year, Cynthia split her time between Vista Grande and Casa Grande Union to train the new bookstore technicians at each site. Thank you, Cynthia, for ensuring our students, families, and staff got what they needed from the bookstore. We appreciate all that you do!
Kim Martin, District Administrative Assistant
(CGUHSD) Kim Martin, District Administrative Assistant, was presented with the Stepping Out From Behind The Counter Award. Renee Morales says, “ Kim is a silent servant of the district. She is not one for recognition or one to want compliments. She serves with pride and with integrity in all she does. Kim has been part of the district for many years and has the bigger picture of “what is right for kids and the good of the district” at the forefront of her work at all times. Her work makes the work of others possible, and the Curriculum Department would not be able to run without her.”

His supervisor, Ralph Belloc, says, “In his short time as a Grounds Worker, Chase has shown exceptional progress and leadership to keep our sports fields and grounds areas safe and looking great for students and staff. Chase goes above and beyond, no matter the size of the task given. One of the comments I received from his immediate supervisor is that he wishes he had five more Chases. On a constant basis, he shows extreme initiative by checking to make sure that all irrigation systems are up and operational so our fields are in great shape.”
Kim Batina, CGUHS Social Studies Teacher
(CGUHSD) Dr. Chris Lineberry nominated Social Studies Teacher Kim Batina for the Stepping Out From Behind The Counter Award. She holds her students to high standards that they carry with them in their other classes. She is also fearless when separating students during times in which they choose to talk with their fists and bodies instead of their voices.” Her students say she is thoughtful, helpful, kind, and nice.

I am proud of her for her commitment to our kids and team.”

(CGUHSD) Mr. Lavender and Dr. Lineberry presented certificates for the Stepping Out From Behind The Counter Award to the Casa Grande Union staff who assisted with the Back-To-School Roundup and Registration. Dr. Lineberry wrote, " I would like to recognize the incredible work of my office staff registration/scheduling team. We could recognize a dozen others for going above and beyond as well. Congratulations to Natalie Clemons, Dr. Ola Johnson, Dr. LaJoi Gardner, Diana Tolda, Suellen Everhart, Kevin White, Leslie Ochoa, DeAnna Myers, Melanie Kieser, Karen Debold, Katrina Wagner, and Charmaine Martinez.

The staff worked long hours and were tireless in the effort to take care of our families.
Jamie Harris, VGHS Behavior Interventionist
(CGUHSD) Congratulations to Jamie Harris, Vista Grande Behavior Interventionist, for receiving the Stepping Out From Behind The Counter Award. Jamie has done numerous things on campus for staff and students, causing a ripple effect. She has made PBIS a priority by producing numerous rewards that are cost-effective as well as inventive. Jamie has taken the time to put up various themed decorations that have incorporated all staff in different locations in the Administration Building. These things are in addition to the students and families she works with to help serve them and the attendance issues they may have.
Dr. DeAnna Addison, VGHS ESS Department Chair/504 Coordinator
(CGUHSD) Congratulations to Dr. DeAnna Addison, who was presented with the Stepping Out From Behind The Counter Award on Tuesday, August 15. Principal Vance Danzy says, “She has stepped up with the new position she has this year in numerous ways. She has taken on the new position and has not complained about the amount of work nor the numerous curveballs that have come her way. I will say this; she will be missed immensely next year!” Once a Spartan, always a Spartan.
Joe Hawkins, VGHS Equipment Manager
(CGUHSD) Vista Grande’s Principal Vance Danzy selected Joe Hawkins, Equipment Manager, for the Stepping Out From Behind The Counter Award. Mr. Danzy says, “Mr. Hawkins has been at Vista Grande High School since it opened. He has done a phenomenal job of taking care of our student-athletes with all their equipment needs. He builds meaningful relationships that last a lifetime for the student-athletes he works for and with.”
Stephen Fillion, VGHS IT Technician
(CGUHSD) Stephen Fillion, VGHS IT Technician, received the Stepping Out From Behind The Counter Award on Thursday, August 24. Principal Vance Danzy says that Stephen does an amazing job helping students and staff to be able to access the technology students use. He is always available for students and staff, which allows everyone to be successful. Stephen is often “unseen” but plays a huge role in the success of everyone on campus who uses technology. We appreciate all he does!
Corina Mendoza, PACE Social Studies Advisor
(CGUHSD) The Stepping Out From Behind The Counter Award was presented to Corina Mendoza, PACE Social Studies Advisor. Her administrator, Crystal Danzy says, “She does not have to be asked to provide that personal support when working with our students and team. She takes the time to ask questions and get to know what our students personally need. She is one of the first to volunteer to give her time and resources when there is a need. Mrs. Mendoza has created a strong and positive relationship with everyone in our school community.” Several students spoke about the positive effect she has had on them.
Christi Saucedo, VGHS Social Studies Teacher
(CGUHSD) What is your ‘why’? Mrs. Christi Saucedo, VGHS Social Studies Teacher, shares her ‘why’: “Empty boxes of donuts. The behind these empty boxes of donuts is ‘My Why’. I had 100% of my 1st hour complete and turn in their project ON TIME! Believe me…that’s a huge deal! I bragged to my principal-THEEE Mr. Danzy- about how proud I was of them. By the end of the hour, Mr. Danzy and his administration team brought in donuts for the whole class and celebrated them. These kids didn’t do it for donuts; I didn’t brag about them for donuts, but MY principal wanted to celebrate my kids with them. My students were elated, and one even said, ‘It’s a great day to be a Spartan’. I drive miles and miles each way, but I sure do love what I do.”

Rotary Student of the Month: Natay Carr [CGUHS]
(CGUHS) Natay Carr was recognized on Tuesday, September 5, as the August Rotary Student of the Month at the district’s Governing Board meeting. Natay, like many in her class, spent her freshman year at home. While this did not afford her the opportunity to get involved, it did teach her important skills that have made her successful. She learned that discipline, hard work, and perseverance are the keys to being successful. During her sophomore year, she was in person once again and challenged herself with AP and honors courses. One of her teachers from that year, Mr. Chris Mallek, said, “I had the honor of teaching Natay in her first AP course her sophomore year. She continually worked hard at mastering the skills and content of this college-level history course. Natay is a dedicated student and a wonderful person. She is one of the nicest people you will meet. Natay always has a bright smile and a kind word for you; a true model of a great Casa Grande Union High School community member.” Natay also joined Key Club and DECA Marketing that year and continues to be a member of each. As a senior, she is the SBE President for Marketing, which means she oversees the DECA Marketing store. In her junior year, she continued her AP classes and joined Link Crew and National Honor Society. Natay is a Link Crew Commissioner now, and when asked why she was chosen to be a leader of leaders, Ms. Kristin McCallin, one of the Link Crew coordinators, said, “Natay joined Link Crew as a junior and showed her leadership skills when the 8th graders came to tour our campus. When it came time for Mrs. Machelor and me to select commissioners for Link Crew, we knew Natay had to be one because she is a strong, confident leader who works well with her peers and the freshmen she mentors.” Natay plans to attend Arizona State University (ASU) in the fall to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Justice Studies. After ASU, she plans to attend law school at Dartmouth or Harvard. Once a practicing lawyer, she plans to open her own firm. Natay is supported by her parents, Denise and Leon Carr, as well as her older sister, Kiara. She says without their support, she wouldn’t be half the amazing person she is today.
Rotary Student of the Month: Chloe Gorgue [CGUHS]
(CGUHS) Chloe Gorgue was recognized on Tuesday, September 5, as the September Rotary Student of the Month at the district’s Governing Board meeting. Like many in her class, she spent her freshman year at home, behind a computer; however, she did not let a pandemic keep her from challenging herself and getting involved. Chloe took honors classes and played volleyball and softball. She was also selected as one of the top students in both English and Band. The challenges continued into her sophomore year when she moved from Washington to Casa Grande. But again, she did not let that stop her and played softball that year on the varsity team. Her junior year, she got really involved. Chloe joined Link Crew, Art Club, and Girls Who Code. Her Girls Who Code sponsor, Mr. John Morris, said, “Chloe is always ready and willing to go...no matter what it is. She always approaches every project with optimism and enthusiasm.” She also took College Algebra and Trigonometry during her junior year, where she was selected as the top Math student. Her Mathematics teacher, Mr. Ernie Razo, stated, “I realized, right away, that Chloe was an outstanding student. She works very diligently to complete the assignments and tasks at hand. She was always punctual for the class and met all deadlines that were set. Chloe is also a natural leader and a team player. She does what it takes to accomplish her and the team's goals. She has an awesome personality and a positive attitude and outlook on life when it comes to her personal and academic goals.” Chloe took a chance and joined the Swim Team as a junior, becoming one of the top swimmers and continued to play Varsity Softball. Her Softball Coach, Ms. Desirea Gil, said, “Chloe is so deserving of this recognition because not only is she an outstanding student and dedicated athlete, but she is also just a great person. She is so polite and has a smile that can truly make your day brighter. Chloe is a model “Cougar”. As a senior, Chloe is a Captain of the Swim Team, Graphic Designer for the Art Club, Vice President of Girls Who Code, plays Softball, and is taking college and AP courses. Her Swim Coach, Mrs. Kim Batina, stated, “Chloe is one of the most talented students I know. She came in and became one of my top swimmers in one year. Chloe encourages all the swimmers at the meets and has earned the position of Captain this year for the Girls Swim Team.” Chloe plans to attend either Grand Canyon University (GCU), Arizona State University (ASU), or Academy of the Arts University (AAU) in the fall, where she plans to major in Graphic Design and minor in Animation. She is supported by her parents, Amy and Philippe Gorgue, and her younger brother, Alex.

Earth Science: Woah Moments
(CGUHS) Ms. Tumanda’s Earth Science classes learned the different stages of the life cycle of a star wherein we relate it to the human life span, created a simple demonstration activity of nuclear fusion which powers stars, and simulated a simple supernova explosion. On August 25, students created a poster identifying and describing the different stages of the life cycle of a star. This activity was done in pairs or partners. Some of the student's output is displayed in the "Student's Output Corner" to boost motivation. This activity helped them understand the different stages of a star's life cycle, from birth to death, and the factors that influence these stages. On August 28, students created a simple demonstration of nuclear fusion using a balloon filled with water in the lab. Air is a great way to illustrate how stars produce energy. This hands-on activity effectively conveyed the basic concepts of how stars generate energy through fusion reactions. On August 31, students simulated a simple supernova blast experiment in the lab. This hands-on activity illustrated the supernova concept and dramatic end of the massive stars.
English Language Arts: Fiction Signposts Review
(CGUHS) In Ms. Espartero's English Language Arts 12 class, students were divided into groups in which they tackled different fiction signposts. Their tasks were to write the sequence of the story and create an illustration with the written main idea, all within a 35-minute timeframe. In a Round Robin Presentation, a selected presenter from each group shared their findings with other groups in 30 seconds to 1-minute intervals. Those students asked questions, sought clarifications, and made comments. The lesson not only developed their confidence in public speaking but also honed their ability to work as a team in identifying fiction signposts, story sequencing, and main ideas. The students successfully analyzed the connection of fiction signposts to the theme of the story.

FAFSA® Form
Each year, the U.S. Department of Education rewards over $120 billion in federal grants, loans, and work-study funds to more than 13 million students. The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is the only way to apply for federal, state, and college aid. It is completely free and it typically takes ONLY 30 minutes to complete. Many schools offer money on a first-come-first-serve basis, so the sooner one applies, the better. For more information, visit your high school's webpage (CGUHS or VGHS).

Scholarship Opportunities
It is a known fact college is expensive and the cost is rising. Do not let that deter you from applying for college. There are many opportunities to help you cover the cost of college. Scholarships are gifts of "free money" that do not need to be paid back, unlike student loans. Most scholarships can be awarded based on merit, which means that students earn them for having good grades, athletic talent, volunteering, or even for a certain demographic. Every year, hundreds of billions of dollars are awarded in scholarship money. There are many sources of scholarship, such as colleges and universities, military, individuals, communities, nonprofits, ethnic/historical organizations, businesses, religious groups, and more. Some scholarships are highly selective but many are not. The best practice is to apply for as many scholarships as possible and start early.
