JHE PHYSICAL EDUCATION
FITNESSGRAM
What is a FitnessGram test?
Fitnessgram is a comprehensive fitness assessment battery for youth. It includes a variety of health- related physical fitness tests designed to assess cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength, muscular endurance, flexibility and body composition. JHE has a Pre Fitnessgram at the beginning of school and a Post Fitnessgram at the end of school.
Is aerobic fitness the single most important health indicator?
Aerobic fitness is the single most important health indicator. Reduces risk for heart attack, stroke and other diseases.
The 5 components that make up total fitness are:
· Cardiovascular Endurance.
· Muscular Strength.
· Muscular endurance.
· Flexibility.
· Body Composition.
What are the 5 Fitnessgram tests?
Terms in this set (5)
· Cardiovascular endurance. Pacer run.
· Muscular endurance. Curl up sit up.
· Muscular strength. Push up.
· Flexibility. Shoulder Stretch
· Body composition. Height and weight.
Healthy Fitness Zone (HFZ)
The goal of FitnessGram is for all children to be in the Healthy Fitness Zone on all five components. Only modest amounts of activity are needed to obtain health benefits, so most students who are regularly active should be able to score within or above the Healthy Fitness Zone on most FitnessGram assessments. Students who are in the Healthy Fitness Zone are considered to be fit enough for good overall health.
Needs Improvement
This zone indicates a potential for future health risks if fitness doesn’t improve. Increased activity as well as eating a healthy, controlled diet could delay or reverse this potential risk. Students in the Needs Improvement Zone will see messaging on their FitnessGram Student Reports explaining how they can move into the Healthy Fitness Zone.
Needs Improvement-Health Risk
The Health Risk zone suggests that the student has a probability for future health problems if they don’t improve their physical fitness. The need for increased activity and eating a healthy diet is more urgent for students in this category than those in the Needs Improvement Zone.

Berkner Hoop Shoot!
Sponsored by Elk’s Club and RISD
The winners from Jess Harben will get to go to Berkner High School on November 6th to compete again against other students from the other RISD Elementary Schools. When someone wins at Berkner he/she will win a trophy and represent Jess Harben Elementary. This will give students an opportunity to compete in a school competition where winners can advance to District, Regional,State and National competitions.
I hope this will motivate the students to improve their basketball skills and help students find activities that they like to do for exercise and a healthy life style.
