Meet the Teacher

Hello my awesome 2nd graders and families. I am super excited to be starting my fourth year here at Wilkesboro Elementary. This is a wonderful school that has helped raise my oldest son, he went here for six years, and now my youngest son. Prior to working at WES I taught at Mulberry Elementary for nine years. I also taught in Haywood County for seven years. My favorite things about teaching are reading great books, learning about the world with my students, and solving 3 digit math problems.

Straight out of high school I was not certain what I wanted to be when I grew up. I loved learning, reading, writing, and watching lots of movies, so I got my BA from the University of California at Santa Barbara in Film Studies. I even worked on a television show for a year in Los Angles. It did not take long, though, for me to realize that was not what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. Since I still loved learning, reading, and writing I decided to become a teacher. I earned my teaching credential at Cal State Fullerton and five years after that earned a Masters in Elementary Education from Western Carolina University.

I am the mom to two wonderful boys. Nick is 10, going on 11, and is a 5th grader here at W.E.S. My other son, Alex, is in 8th grade at Wilkes Central Middle School. My boys and I all love to watch nature shows, play with our dogs Rosie and Maggie, and eat lots doughnuts. I have been married to my super talented husband, Blaine Johnston, for 17 years. Blaine is a native to Wilkes County. I, however, was born and raised in Southern California. I have lived in North Carolina for 20 years, and ten years ago I was able to convince my mom and step dad to move here too.

There are so many cool things we get to learn about in 2nd grade: animals, famous athletes and inventors, natural disasters, and 3 digit math problems. Each of you gets your own Chromebook on which you will listen to great stories, research the world, create google slides, and maybe even make a movie or two! We will also get to GO ON FIELD TRIPS AGAIN!!! One of the places we get to go is the Greensboro Science Center!
