Music with Mrs. Johnson

I am excited to share another school year with your young musicians! Below I have some details regarding this year's concerts and events, as well as a brief overview of our yearly curriculum and some information on how to access our curriculum at home for some additional learning. It is also my plan to being including some photos and videos of your amazing students in action!

Concerts are held for each individual grade level (1-5) and take place in the Keller Gymnasium.

Concerts will begin at 7:00pm.

• Thursday, February 27th- 1st Grade
• Tuesday, March 18th- 3rd Grade
• Thursday, April 24th- 2nd Grade
• Thursday , May 8th- 4th Grade
• Thursday, June 5th- 5th Grade

Question: What should my student wear?

Answer: Something nice and seasonally appropriate, that complies with our school and district dress codes- no costumes or specific outfits are necessary.

Question: When does my student need to arrive?

Answer: Students should be in the gym and ready to sing at 7:00pm. No early arrival is necessary, although families may want to arrive a bit early to get their seats.

Question: How long is the concert?

Answer: The concert should last around 30 minutes.

Question: Does my student have to come?

Answer: Concerts are the culmination of what we are learning in class and should be viewed as an important childhood experience for our students. Research has shown that children who periodically participate in group performances demonstrate an increase in communication, coordination, cooperation and even empathy. Participation has also been shown to increase brain plasticity. That being said, each family has their own set of priorities and circumstances which will always be respected

Please note that these sheets come directly from our curriculum site, Musicplay Online, so I would ask that you please excuse that the DK class sheet is labeled as "Pre-K."

For students in our self-contained Special Education classrooms, we also hold Apative Music classes several times a week. The focus during these classes is to help students work towards their individual student goals and overall classroom goals through music. Examples of these goals include, but are not limited to:

• Following directions
• Communication skills (verbal, non-verbal, AAC)
• Gross and fine motor skills
• Order and sequential activities

BACKGROUND

I grew up in southeast Michigan and have been a musician all my life. My primary instrument is voice, but I have also played piano since age 5 and percussion since age 11.

FAMILY

My husband Eric and I have two children; Arthur and Thomas. We also have a dog named Maggie. Outside of work, I enjoy reading, golfing, playing board games, and going on outdoor adventures with my family.

EDUCATION

I obtained my Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Wayne State University in 2011 and obtained my Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Marygrove College in 2019.

I also serve as the Music Coordinator for Royal Oak Schools.
