Message from Administration
Mrs. Hook is the Lisbon 2023 Staff Excellence Recipient
We recently celebrated the recipient of the HCPSS Staff Excellence Award for Lisbon Elementary. This award recognizes exemplary performance by individuals that have consistently excelled in their positions, as well as demonstrated a strong commitment to the mission, vision, and values of the Howard County Public School System. One individual from each of the 77 schools/centers were selected, along with one individual from each of the six Central Office divisions for a total of 83 HCPSS Staff Excellence recipients.
We are pleased to share that the 2023 HCPSS Staff Excellence Award winner for Lisbon Elementary is Mrs. Laura Hook! Mrs. Hook is one of our Fifth Grade teachers and has been a part of our leadership team for many years. Mrs. Hook is deserving of this award because she is a dynamic leader who is student focused. Her positive energy is contagious and we are extremely grateful for her commitment to our school community. Mrs. Hook goes above and beyond each and every day, and is willing to do anything to ensure student success. Lisbon Elementary would not be the same without the support and dedication of Mrs. Hook!
We surprised Mrs. Hook with her award and flowers at our Staff Meeting this past Wednesday. If you would like to send Mrs. Hook an email of congratulations, her email address is laura_b_hook@hcpss.org. Let’s try and flood her inbox!
Congratulations Mrs. Hastings
Please join me in congratulating Mrs. Hastings on her National Board Certification!
National Board Certification (NBC) is the highest-level credential in the educational profession. Teachers who achieve National Board Certification have met rigorous standards through intensive study, self-assessment, peer review and expert evaluation.
Howard County is among the top five Maryland districts by historical number of NBCTs, with a total of 212 teachers who have achieved national certification. HCPSS is also among the top five Maryland districts for the number of current National Board candidates, with more than 400 teachers pursuing certification.

New School Start Time for the 2023-2024 School Year
During its Feb. 23 meeting, the Howard County Board of Education adjusted the start times of schools for the 2023-2024 school year. There is no impact to the current school year. All changes will take effect in August 2023.
The exact start time for each school will be determined this spring and shared with the community as transportation routes are finalized. However, Lisbon Elementary is part of Tier 3, which means our school start time will be approximately 9:15 AM next school year. If your child will attend a different school next year, the start times for all schools Links to an external site. can be found on the HCPSS website.
HCPSS Superintendent Dr. Michael Martirano shared: “finalizing and fully implementing this plan will be a months-long process.” Much more information will be provided to students, staff and families from HCPSS and our school throughout that process.

Student Drug Use: A Crisis We Can’t Ignore
Dear Lisbon families:
HCPSS is hosting a community event called Student Drug Use: A Crisis We Can’t Ignore to engage students, parents/guardians, staff and community members regarding the substance abuse crisis that is directly impacting our schools and community.
The event will be held on Tuesday, March 28, from 7-9 p.m., at Howard High School (8700 Old Annapolis Road, Ellicott City).
Superintendent Dr. Michael J. Martirano will keynote the event, sharing local and national data about student substance use and behavioral health needs that illustrates the frightening realities our youth are facing, and how HCPSS is responding to those needs. Following Dr. Martirano’s remarks, attendees will have the opportunity to choose one of several breakout sessions led by HCPSS staff and community health partners.
