House 2
We bought math houses!
This week we practiced our addition and subtraction strategies by experiencing a real life situation. We bought math houses! On Tuesday, the students received a loan, picked a house, wrote a check and planned their needs and wants for the big purchase. On Wednesday, they purchased items for their house. They had to constantly track each purchase and calculate the amount left in their budget. On the final day, students continued to purchase items, experienced the ups and downs of home ownership and completed a final reflection. It was a wonderful immersive math experience that allowed students to make important decisions and use math in real ways.
Digital Reading Resources
Over the past few weeks we have used our iPads to allow us to access digital reading resources. We have used MyOn, Wonderopolis and Newsela. All of these resources can be accessed at home and serve as great places for additional reading opportunities.
Digestive Demonstration and More
This week we continued our study of the human body. We focused on the digestive system. We completed a demonstration, researched using a Padlet, and discussed important functions and organs. Next week we will investigate the skeletal and muscular systems.
Kid Blogs
Please be sure to check out your child's blog. They have recently been updated to include information about our week and ideas for genius hour. They can easily be accessed through our class webpage.
6 Word Memoirs and Narrative Beginnings...
This week we worked to brainstorm and create our six word memoirs. The students worked hard to carefully choose the words that crafted their life message.
Here are a few of our six word memoirs:
- Math was invented to annoy me
- Tall in words, short in life
- Student by day, sleeper by night
We then spun these memoirs into larger creations. We thought of them as the title of our book. We then brainstormed chapters in our life story. Next week we will work to pick one of our chapters to "blow up" into a narrative story.
