Holly Academy News & Views

As we honor the 21st anniversary of September 11, 2001, we do so while reflecting on the devastating terror attacks that took nearly 3,000 lives. We commemorate those who we lost and give thanks to the brave first responders who put their lives on the line. Take a moment on Sunday to consider what we stand for as a nation and how we can work together to make the world a better place for all.

Week two with students has been great! The students and staff are getting settled in and we are getting back into full gear. The staff and I are reviewing our curriculum and going through needs for the semester. Along with reviewing the curriculum, we have also already started some assessment testing. Details are below:

Dibels Testing:

The Intervention team is ready to begin DIBELS (new name...Acadience) Testing our Y5s-1st grade students for their fall benchmark. Testing has started and our intervention team is working hard to make sure all students are tested.

M-Step:

Monday, September 19th, is our Virtual Curriculum Night via Zoom. Teachers will present an overview of their curriculum during a 20 minute session. We are participating in the Holly Days Parade and Community Play Day on Saturday, September 10th (parade begins at 11:00am). Please join us to walk in the parade and wear your Holly Academy "swag". We are also looking for a family or two to kindly drive their pick-up truck in the parade. To ensure that we are providing the healthiest environment for our Huskies, our expectation is that staff and families will use good judgment and stay home when they are sick. Should your child have a fever, our school protocol is that they may not return to school until they are fever free, without medication, for 24 hours. Should your Husky be exposed to a positive COVID case, we will follow the Oakland County Health Department’s guidelines.

HA will continue our daily cleaning protocols using products approved by the CDC to be effective against the COVID-19 virus.

As a reminder, students will be marked as unexcused unless a parent calls the attendance line. When calling please include your child's name, grade, and reason for the absences. If your child is ill please include symptoms.

To reach the attendance line call 248-634-5554 and press 7.

The safety of our Huskies is our number one priority. We have noticed that students are running between cars in the morning in the west parking lot. If you are dropping off your Husky to walk into the school, we request that you walk them from the car to the door. Also, in drop-off lanes, please do not release your child until the first space by the crosswalk. Please follow the yellow line and drop off your child before the crosswalk, not past it. Do not stop in or block the crosswalk.

Students who completed any summer learning materials can submit them to the office or their homeroom teacher by Friday, September 16th. Please make sure all work is labeled with the child's first and last name, along with the homeroom teacher's name. All students that turn in proof of completing summer learning materials will earn a dress-down ticket, award, and recognition on our summer learning bulletin board.

Boys Basketball and Girls Cheerleading will begin in late October. If you are interested in coaching for either of these sports, please reach out to Angie Cryderman at crydermana@hollyacademy.org and Jose Melero at melerojose@hollyacademy.org.

Annually, Holly Academy observes Unity Day, on October 19th to show unity for kindness, acceptance, and inclusion, and to send a visible message that no child should ever experience bullying. We offer "Stand Up To Bullying" dress code-approved shirts that work perfectly for Unity Day, or we allow students to wear orange on that day. The order form for the Stand Up To Bullying shirts is below. Please note that elementary students may not wear the hoodie-style shirt as a dress code-approved item; however, the hoodie may be worn on dress-down days.

The Holly Academy PTO has been very active over the summer with the coordination of events and fundraisers for the 2022-23 school year. We also know that planning is key to success. Attached is a calendar that shows all the meetings, events, and fundraisers for the year. We look forward to a successful year! To learn more about the PTO, please join us at 8:00am on Wednesday, September 14th for our first meeting of the school year.

Uniform patches can be ironed onto clothing items to make them dress code appropriate.

Examples:

- Add the patch to a crewneck sweatshirt (approved dress code colors only)

- Add the patch to a zip-up fleece jacket (approved dress code colors only)
