Welcome Back Panthers!!
August 2, 2022
Welcome back! It is going to be an outstanding school year!
We hope all of our families have had an enjoyable summer. It is hard to believe that school starts in just a few days on Monday, August 22. Our doors will open at 7:35 AM daily and classes begin at 7:50 AM. The first few days will be a time for students and parents to learn our procedures. Please allow for additional transportation time during the first two weeks while students, families, and staff become familiar with new routines.
This newsletter contains some useful information as you start to get your student ready to come back to Charles Town Middle. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to reach out to our incredible front office staff.
A message from our principal
Dear Charles Town Middle School and Community,

We are all excited to have students back on campus, rejuvenated and enthusiastic for learning. This is going to be a very exciting year! Our staff are working hard to ensure we are ready to welcome our Panthers back and provide quality learning environments, leading to success for all. It is our mission to help every child feel welcomed, connected, and a part of our school community. West Virginia state law requires that all children entering school for the first time in K-12 must show proof of immunizations, in addition 7th and 12th graders must show additional proof of Tdap and MCV4 (meningitis) immunizations." If you need help obtaining immunizations for your student, please contact the Jefferson County Health Department at 304-728-8416, or your Primary Care Physician. Please submit immunization records to the school nurse. Please understand, if immunization records are not provided for 7th graders, those students will not be able to attend school per state policy.
If your child requires any medications, inhalers, etc., please reach out to the nurses office at 304-725-7821 ext. 3210. Thank you.

Changes to Cell Phone Policy
We understand how beneficial technology is in education. We also understand how consumed our students can be with the use of electronic devices (cell phones, ear buds, etc.) and often struggle to learn the appropriate "when and where" with technology. We have seen an increase in disruption to instruction and student learning due to cell phones. CTMS is a 1:1 school with Chromebooks, therefore, personal devices are not needed for school projects or assignments.
In an attempt to help students lessen the distraction of their electronic device, we are prohibiting the use of personal cell phones and/or audio devices connected to cell phones (ear buds, air pods, bluetooth headphones, etc.) during the school day at Charles Town Middle School. Cell Phones are expected to be OFF and AWAY during the school day. CTMS is adopting the same device policies already established at other JCS Schools.
If you need to contact your student, or your student contact you, please do so through the school's main phone line at 304-725-7821. Students may use the phones in the office with permission from a school official. The student will be provided with a private setting to speak with their parent.
We know that this change in policy may be difficult for some students. CTMS administration is asking for your support to help us emphasize the importance of instructional time as we work to provide all students with the best learning environment for our students. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the CTMS administration office.

CANVAS - Parent and Student Portal
Access your (or your child's) schedule, grades, assignments and attendance data using the CANVAS program. Access will be available August 18.
In order to access your student's account, you must pair to their account as an observer. In Canvas, the Observer role can be used to enroll parents, guardians, and mentors. Observers have limited permissions that allow them to see what is going on in a course without interrupting the flow of daily course communication.
Not paired to your student as an observer? Check out this link to find our how to pair to your student's account.
We can't wait to have our students back on campus!! See you August 22!
