Mental Health Minute
The Mental Health team at Oak Grove, consisting of two School Social Workers, two School Psychologists, and the Social Emotional Learning Coordinator, will be providing you information on several social emotional topics throughout the 2020-21 school year. Twice a month, we will provide you with a brief overview of a topic as well as at least one resource for additional information. Please feel free to reach out Ryan Murray, SEL Coordinator, if you have questions or need help finding more information.
This week's topic is How To Best Manage Summer Vacation. Summer is a time to get outside, travel, attend special activities, and so much more! Naturally, it is easier to become more unstructured and free spirited. Some children can adapt well to these changes; yet most children still require a fair amount of structure and routine. Planning ahead, staying on a consistent summer schedule, and letting your child participate in choices will help maintain order and peace!
Ideas that will help:
- Plan adventures, yet also include downtime.
- It’s okay if your children indicate they are “bored”. Children by nature are creative and can problem solve; just provide some time for them to work through the boredom.
- Include children in some of the responsibilities of planning adventures and activities.
- Have the children keep up with chores (make lunches, do laundry, clean up messes). Younger children may need to be shown how to do chores properly a few times first.
- Have fun yourself and enjoy this time of year!

Curriculum Corner
Hello Oak Grove Community,
Today’s Oak Grove News marks my 289th and final Curriculum Corner report. We have covered testing dates, instructional practices, parenting tips, technology suggestions, TAG information, and sometimes just a good laugh. It is with mixed emotions that I share with you my plans to leave Oak Grove at the end of June. I have been offered an exciting opportunity to become the Assistant Superintendent with Mundelein School District 75 to help support and develop their instructional programming under a shared superintendent with Mundelein High School District 120.
I want to thank you for a wonderful seven years at Oak Grove School. I have enjoyed the opportunity to work with the staff, students and families on so many great initiatives. I wish you continued success and know that the current leadership will continue to build on our many accomplishments.
