Career Awareness Program to Connect to Black History Month and Women's History Month Celebrations

Our staff members have been thinking about how to have a meaningful and relevant celebration of Black History Month as well as Women’s History Month. We also want to align the work to our family goal setting initiative and the District’s focus on college and career readiness. The goal of the program is to have our students reflect on how they will make their own history.

Throughout the rest of January, Gearity will focus on College & Career readiness so students can to start think about their future! Mrs. Higham will work with all students to explore college and career interests during her classroom guidance lessons. We are asking families to support the Gearity College & Career Spirit Celebration by having their students follow the dress up day schedule which can be accessed by clicking on the images below. Mrs. Higham has also created College and Career activities for morning circles so students can regularly reflect on career interests at the start of their school day.

Over the next few weeks, our students will identify a STEM field they want to work in. Once the field is identified they will research, for their Capstone Project, an African-American and a Female STEM Professional who have made an impact in their chosen field. Students will identify how their role models trained for their field, developed job experience, and the impact they have had on their STEM Field. Once done, they will develop a goal for making their own history in their STEM area and a plan to achieve that goal. Students will present their work to their grade level at the 2nd Capstone on March 14th.

Teachers are always encouraged to develop classroom projects throughout February and March to support students in celebrating Black History Month and Women’s History Month so additional information will come from the classroom teachers.

Now that we are halfway through the school year, we would like family input on how our Positive Behavior Support Program (PBIS) is working. At Gearity, the PAWS program is how we explain expectations to students and the PAWS store is where they can spend their points they earn for meeting expectations. We have seen a major reduction in discipline incidents this school year as referrals have declined by 60%. Please take a moment to complete this survey so we can get your input on what is working, what can be tweaked and what needs to be changed. Walk In Recruiting Event on January 25th

The District is looking to fill several classified job and will host a walk in recruiting event on the 25th from 4 - 6 pm at the Board of Education. Please share the information about the recruiting event with any family or friends who may be interested in becoming a part of the CHUH team. Gearity still has an opening for a lunch aide for example. Thanks in advance for getting the word out!

These updates provide information about the number of days your student has missed. They can also help connect you to resources.
