SME newsletter for families and the community
Dear Parents,
Dear Parents and Guardians,
I hope this message finds you well. I am thrilled to share some exciting news about an initiative that will add a breath of fresh air to our educational approach: Outdoor Learning.
In response to the evolving educational landscape and a growing body of research highlighting the benefits of outdoor education, we are excited to integrate more outdoor learning experiences into our curriculum. Nature has a unique way of inspiring curiosity, fostering creativity, and promoting overall well-being, and we believe that by taking learning outside, we can enhance the learning journey for our students.
Our school has been working this year with folks from the Cliffs, Clemson University, and community members to plan several outdoor learning spaces for the future.
These include:
1 - refurbishing the nature trail
2 - refurbishing the inner courtyard as a reading area
3 - installation of vegetable garden/greenhouse area
4 - installation of outdoor eating spaces and outdoor classroom (Secret Garden)
5 - development of early childhood play spaces
If this is an area that you are interested in supporting, please let us know. We are dreaming big and hope that we can work to make those dreams come true!
Warmest regards,
Melissa Terry

Best of the Nest
Each month at Six Mile Elementary, we focus on different character traits and talk about ways to show those traits to others. We discuss the trait in morning meeting in our classrooms. We spotlight the trait on the school news show. Mrs. Orr, our guidance counselor, goes into classrooms and does special lessons with the trait. At the end of each month, we have a Best of the Nest party to honor those students who "shine" in that area.
This month, our word is Responsibility.
Responsibility is proving you can be trusted with what is expected of you
Absence Notes
If your student is absent, you have three days to send a note stating the reason for their absence before it is counted unexcused. You can send a handwritten note or you can email Stephanie Merck at stephaniemerck@pickens.k12.sc.us. You can also email your child's teacher.
When students have accumulated 3 absences in a row without a note, Mrs. Plyler will have to schedule a meeting for an Attendance Conference. Please make sure to get your note in so that this does not happen.
