RECOGNIZING CHILD HEALTH DAY
Did you know Calvin Coolidge created Child Health Day to bring awareness to the health needs of children? Up until that point, there was no specialized health care for children, and their health needs were often overlooked. It was originally created on May 1, 1928, and later moved to where we observe it today, the first Monday in October. Every year our current president makes a proclamation on Child Health Day regarding the current steps in place to protect our children. See this year's proclamation by President Joe Biden. For the month of October, the presentation in the elementary classrooms is on child health and ways we can be healthy. Such as: washing our hands, taking a bath, eating healthy, and exercising to name a few. I encourage you and your family to find something health-related to add to your daily routine. Maybe itโs taking a walk as a family. Maybe itโs encouraging each other to eat more fruits or vegetables. And maybe it's scheduling a well-child appointment. Whatever it is, use it as a way to teach your kids about ways to they can make healthy choices. Last month we had the dental bus out to help keep our teeth healthy and 60+ Hemlock students went home with healthier smiles. This month, the Saginaw County Health Department also rolled out a program called Step Up and Bwell. This program was started to encourage students K-12 to be more active. Accounts are set up with parental consent and all the schools in Saginaw County compete against each other to see who is the most active. Itโs simple to sign up. Click here for the letter regarding the program. Use this link to sign up.
