UIL Academics
On Saturday (January 13) at 6 AM, 15 of our BHS students were boarding the bus to Burnet High School to compete in the first UIL Academic invitational contest of the school year. We were competing against Georgetown, Llano, Brady, Burnet, Belton Gateway and Liberty Hill.
BHS took first place with our Literary Criticism team, with Julianna Foley, Sophie Blankenburg, and Korina Forsberg. Medalling individually, Juilanna earned 1st place, and Sophie, 4th place overall.
A second place team medal was earned by the Accounting team of Mitchell Frazier, Fuyu Dai & Celeste Campa. Mitchell also earned 3rd place overall, and Fuyu earned 6th place.
BHS won the 3rd place team award in Current Issues and Events with Clark White, Stephen Arnold, Sophie Blankenburg, and Ella Baker, who also placed 4th individually.
The Calculator team of Korina Forsberg, Fuyu Dai, Mitchell Frazier, Celeste Campa, Cambel Plahy and Hailee Weiner also took 3rd place.
Perla Galvan earned 4th place in Editorial Writing, Faith Tucker earned 5th place in Headline Writing, and Alex Hutton came in 6th in Copy Editing.
Congratulations to everyone who competed, and their coaches.
Water Issues
The City of Blanco has had some recent challenges with their water system due to the colder temperatures. This has affected BHS as well. While water service was not interrupted at BHS, the recent water boil notice required BHS to disable all water fountains and bottle fill stations. Students were asked to bring bottled water for their own use and there are bottles of water in the office for students who forgot or who ran through the water supply they brought. Although the boil notice is no longer in effect, BHS has water stations disabled until we can flush lines and change out filters on those stations. We are doing this to ensure the safety of our students and staff. This process should be completed by Monday and students will be able to access the water fountains and fill stations at that time. Thank you for your assistance and patience as we have dealt with the water issues the last few days.
Band
The BHS Band will be performing at the San Antonio Spurs basketball game on January 24 against the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Basketball
The girls basketball team traveled to Comfort on Friday (Jan 12) and added to their district win total in the process. The win put the Panthers at 3-0. The Panthers hosted Brady on Wednesday (Jan 17). Due to the icy conditions and cold weather the games were moved to Wednesday instead of Tuesday. The girls fell behind early and could never overcome that deficit. They dropped their first game of the district schedule and are now 3-1. There was no JV game due to the games being rescheduled. The girls will travel to Llano on Friday (Jan 19) to round out the first half of their district schedule. They will begin the second half on Tuesday (Jan 23) at Ingram and travel to Florence on Friday (Jan 26).
The boys basketball team opened their district schedule on Friday (Jan 12) when they traveled to Comfort. The Panthers got the district schedule off on the right foot beating the Bobcats and going 1-0. The Panthers hosted Brady on Wednesday (Jan 17). This game was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but was moved to Wednesday due to the icy conditions earlier in the week. In a back and forth game most of the way, the Panthers held tough and with the scored tied and the clock winding down, found a way to win as Justin Karnes hit a 3 point shot with 2 seconds left. Brady was unable to answer and the Panthers ran their district mark to 2-0. The boys will travel to Llano on Friday (Jan 19), Ingram (Jan 23), and will finish the first half of their district schedule at Florence (Jan 26).
