MES Monthly Newsletter
January, 2024
Dear MES Families,
Happy New Year! I hope this letter finds you well and that you enjoyed a restful and joyful holiday season. As we kick off the new year at Midland Elementary, I am excited to share some upcoming events that promise to bring both excitement and inspiration to our school community.
One of the highlights of January will be the much-anticipated visit from Tim Hannig and his incredible "Pro Kids Assembly and Family Show." We are thrilled to host Tim, a renowned performer, educator, and motivator, who brings a unique blend of entertainment and positive messaging that resonates with audiences of all ages.
Tim Hannig's assembly is not just a show; it's an experience that combines laughter, magic, and important life lessons. His ability to engage and connect with students is truly remarkable, making this event not only entertaining but also educational. The assembly for students will take place on Thursday, January 18th during the school day.
But that's not all! For an extra dose of family fun, we invite you to join us in the evening for Tim Hannig's exclusive "Family Show." This event promises to be a fantastic experience for the whole family, featuring even more laughter, magic, and positive messages. The Family Show will take place on the same day, Thursday, January 18th, at 6:30 PM.
As we strive to create a positive and engaging learning environment at Midland Elementary, events like the Pro Kids Assembly align perfectly with our commitment to nurturing not only academic excellence but also the social and emotional well-being of our students.
We look forward to seeing you there, and we appreciate your ongoing support in making Midland Elementary a vibrant and thriving community for our students. If you have any questions or need further information about the event, please don't hesitate to contact our school office.
Thank you for being an essential part of the Midland Elementary family, and let's make 2024 a year filled with growth, learning, and memorable experiences!
Best regards,
Jason Wynn

Winter MAP Testing Results
We are pleased to announce the results of our Winter MAP assessment, which provides valuable insights into our students' growth and achievements in both reading and math.
For our reading goal this year, we aim for 75% of students to score proficient on the MAP assessment by Spring. We are thrilled to share that on the winter MAP assessment for reading, 71% of our students achieved proficiency. We are just shy of our target, and we have full confidence that with continued efforts and support, we will reach and even exceed this goal by the end of the school year.
In math, our goal is for 73% of students to score proficient by Spring. We are delighted to report that on the winter MAP assessment for math, an impressive 79% of our students demonstrated proficiency. This is a fantastic accomplishment and speaks volumes about the hard work and dedication of our students, our student's families, and educators.
Food Drive
Through the generosity of our students and their families, we were able to collect over 1,400 pounds of food for the Lacon Food Pantry! Students have earned a movie and pajama day with hot chocolate in January. Mr. Wynn will also be spending a day outside in January. Great work Timberwolves!
Crosswalk Safety
Lacon Police Department has asked us to share that vehicles waiting for students in the circle drive should not be blocking the crosswalk. Blocking crosswalks can create hazards for pedestrians, especially our little ones trying to cross the street safely. Please do your part and avoid parking in the crosswalk.
The Pro Kids Show
We are thrilled to announce the upcoming Pro Kids Family Show, a delightful event for students and their families, right here at Midland Elementary School Gym. Mark your calendars for Thursday, January 18th, at 6:30 PM, as this promises to be an evening filled with laughter, wonder, and family fun.
The Pro Kids Family Show is a high-energy, interactive experience that captivates audiences of all ages. Prepare for an evening of laughter, amazement, and entertainment suitable for the entire family. The show features a blend of magic, comedy, and audience participation, ensuring that everyone in attendance becomes a part of the excitement.
Country Financial Teacher of the Month
Financial Representative Jonathan Krieghauser with Country Financial has partnered with MES to provide Teacher of the Month awards to teachers in our building each month during the 2023-2024 school year.
Congratulations to our November Teacher of the Month: Rebekah Hayes
Recess - Colder Weather
It's time to begin thinking about cooler weather. Students will go outside for recess unless the temperature or weather is below 20 degrees. Please make sure your students are able to stay warm by dressing them appropriately.
Students must be properly dressed to play in the snow. This attire requires boots, snow pants, coats, mittens or gloves, and a hat or hood.
Emergency Closings Due to Inclement Weather
Severe weather sometimes makes it necessary to close the school. A district decision will be made no later than 6:15 am. Families that have up-to-date contact information in Skyward will receive a phone call and/or email stating that school has been canceled. In addition, the following radio and TV stations along with the district website and Facebook Pages can be referred to:
- WHOI TV
- WMBD
- WEEK TV 25
- WYZZ
If bad weather occurs during the day, the safety and welfare of the students will be the first consideration. Students should know what to do and where to go if they are sent home before regular dismissal time. Please set up and emergency plan for such instances.
E-Learning Plan
If school is canceled, the superintendent may declare the day an E-Learning Day. Please see the guidelines below for the procedures that will be followed in the event of an E-Learning Day. Please click on the E-Learning Plan link below to read the procedures.
