Superintendent Update: LASD Equity Policy Task Force
As the Board approved revisions to the Los Altos School District Equity policy yesterday evening, Superintendent Baier provided an update to the Trustees regarding the district's action to ensure uniform adherence to the policy across all of our schools. The Board had unanimously approved the Equity Policy in February 2020 and made revisions to the policy at its June 8 meeting, reflecting on recent events that highlight the ongoing injustices Black Americans face in our nation.
As the policy states: "In order to eradicate institutional bias of any kind, including implicit or unintentional biases and prejudices that affect student achievement, and to eliminate disparities in educational outcomes for students from historically underserved and underrepresented populations, the district shall proactively identify class, cultural, and digital biases as well as practices, policies, and institutional barriers that negatively influence student learning, perpetuate achievement gaps, and impede equal access to opportunities for all students."
Mr. Baier announced a process to form an Equity Task Force, comprised of diverse members of the LASD community. The Equity Task Force will be charged with examining and evaluating the current state of LASD as measured against this Equity Policy, as well as inform future decisions impacting our students, staff and community.
Superintendent Baier will bring an initial plan to the Board in August, outlining the membership of the task force, the initial work to be conducted and a proposed timeline. To review the Los Altos School District Equity Policy, check out item E.1. on the agenda online.
Superintendent Update: Fall 2020-21 Reopening Plans
Superintendent Baier shared progress regarding the district's Health and Safety planning process for the 2020-21 school year. The effort is directed to do everything possible to safely bring students, teachers and staff back to our campuses in the fall. As Superintendent Baier has reported previously, public health guidelines will very likely prevent us from bringing all students back to campus on a daily basis. Therefore, the district is planning for a hybrid instructional model, including some Virtual School and some in-classroom time.
In order to prepare to bring students back to campus in a hybrid instructional model, Mr. Baier provided an update of the health and safety aspects of the plan. As the Santa Clara County Public Health Department will not release guidelines to reopen schools until July 1, LASD is doing what it can to prepare now with minimal information. This includes ordering supplies like PPE, creating plans for illness prevention and heightened sanitization, additional staff training, and the social-emotional and mental health practices for students and staff.
The Board will review a draft instructional plan at its June 29 meeting. The public is invited to join the meeting to ask questions and provide feedback. With the public's input and guidance from our public health officials, the Board plans to approve a final instructional plan on July 6. We will keep you updated regarding the timing and information to participate in these meetings.
