Shifting to Canvas
August 23, 2023
Canvas Implementation 2023-2024 Priorities
- Division of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment will push curriculum to teachers’ courses throughout the week of August 7, 2023. In courses where teachers receive pushed curriculum, they should have all resources by August 14, 2023.
- All teachers will utilize a common home page template to maintain consistency in navigation among HCPS courses and point students to modules where all digital content is accessed.
- Students and teachers will access digital resources through Canvas.
- Secondary teachers will:
- publish each course after modifying the HCPS home page using the established template, following the 22-23 guidelines.
- post instructional resources at least once a week in Canvas modules so that students have a broad overview of the instructional outcomes of the week, providing as many digital resources to students as possible through modules.
- Elementary intermediate teachers will:
- publish at least one course in Canvas so that each elementary intermediate student uses Canvas at least once a week for accessing digital content, submitting assignments, participating in discussions, etc. through modules.
- Elementary primary teachers will:
- publish at least one course in Canvas so that each elementary primary student uses Canvas for accessing digital content and digital resources as appropriate throughout the year.

Should I Crosslist My Courses?
Cross-listing allows you to move section enrollments from individual courses and combine them into one course. This feature is helpful for instructors who teach several sections of the same course and only want to manage course data in one location.
- Follow the steps in the video created by Teacher Specialist Jennifer Gusso on this Canvas-created video. De-cross-listing is complex, so only cross-list when you are certain that you want your courses merged.
- You should only cross-list BEFORE students do any work. Otherwise, cross-listed students will lose access to their assignment submissions and grades since these are stored in their original course site. We suggest doing this at the beginning of the semester prior to publishing your course to students.
- Merge courses before adding content. When the merge is complete, you will no longer have access to the original course spaces. If you have content in the child course, copy it into your sandbox before cross-listing.
- Crosslisting courses will not affect grade passback.
