Farm to School Newsletter
March 2023
DEAR FAMILIES & FRIENDS:
It is March. Is Spring here? Okay, there is still snow on the ground and it is a balmy 25 degrees out as I write this, but one can dream right?
Over here in the Farm to School world, Elena has been busy seed sorting and getting supplies to schools. We will be starting seeds in the classroom before we know it! We have done some pretty fun activities in the classroom in the last month. Students at Buckley, Courtade and Northport were able to plant some black bean and Swiss chard seeds to watch how roots grow! It was really exciting for the students to watch their plants flourish! In 4th and 5th grade at Courtade and 5th grade at Buckley, students learned about photosynthesis using a chemical called bromothymol blue and aquatic plants!
Our Lifespan lessons were focused on physical activity in the month of February and in March we are focusing on school lunches! Students love moving around, so we played games and learned about our heart rate and set goals for physical activity. Kids should aim for at least 60 minutes everyday and hey, that metric wouldn't hurt adults to follow either!! Our snacks were yogurt parfaits in the younger grades and our older students made New Mexico Harvest Soup. Year after year, in every grade, yogurt parfaits stand out as a fan favorite!
