CELEBRATIONS!
Great things are happening at WCS!
This week we had eight students from MHS join us for their community service day. Students helped out in various classrooms for the morning. It was a treat to see so many familiar faces!
Quonset Hardscape donated and delivered all of the sand for the Pre-K sandbox this week! Students are thrilled with the new area to play. THANK YOU!!
GET GLOWING FUN RUN!
BRR!! IT'S GETTING COLD!
As the weather gets cooler, please remember to send your student in with appropriate clothing to be outside. Coats, hats, & pants are key. Please label things with your last name, this helps keeps things out of the Lost & Found.
ATTENDANCE CALLS
If your student is going to be out of school for any reason, please remember to call the school to let the office know. Students who are absent without notice will be marked "unexcused," and an automated attendance call will go out.
A LETTER FROM MR. LIBBY
Greetings Wildcat Families,
As we continue to make our way through October you might be starting to think about Halloween and all of the excitement that comes with it! This year Halloween falls on a Monday and I want to inform you that we ask students and staff not to wear costumes to school. Our focus during the day is on learning and we want to minimize distractions as much as possible. With that in mind, I also discourage families from sending in snacks for the class.
As you know we are a nut safe school, which means that in order to ensure safety for ALL students we ask that no peanut/tree nuts or products made with or containing them be sent into school with your child. The reason for a ban on nuts is that nuts are the allergen that may cause a life threatening allergic reaction. Since there is no cure for an allergic reaction, the best way to avoid it is through prevention of exposure. We request this of all our faculty, staff and all students.
I thank you in advance for helping us focus on learning and the safety of our students as we find ways to enjoy this exciting Holiday.
Take care,
Mr. Libby
WCS PTA
We are getting so excited for our Get Glowing Fun Run on October 21st from 5-7! Here’s some answers to a few frequently asked questions!
How Do I Sign Up?
It’s easy! Just make a fundraising page at
https://app.99pledges.com/fund/woolwichPTA/addme, submit an envelope with donated funds (labeled with child’s name and teacher), OR send us an email at mywcspta@gmail.com and tell us that your student would like to run! Any of these options will ensure that your child will be ready to run on October 21st!
When are donations due? Can I bring donation money in more than once?
Donations are due on October 21st. Donations can be submitted at any time, and money can be sent in more than once (no need to save that envelope until the 21st!). Please make sure that any envelopes are labeled with your child’s name and teacher, so they and their class get credit for the donation!
Will there be activities besides running?
Yes! We will have glow in the dark tattoos, glow in the dark chalk drawing, local emergency vehicles, and a small obstacle course. We will also have pizza, baked goods, and fun glow jewelry for sale!
What is the schedule for the Fun Run?
Check in: 5-6 PM
Prek-2nd grades: 6:00-6:15
3rd-5th grades: 6:15- 6:30
6th-8th grades: 6:30-6:45
Adults: 6:45-7 PM
Each division will run two laps around the track (½ mile). Please make sure to have your student wear comfortable clothes and running shoes, and be prepared for a great time!
GATE DAY 10/12!
Did you know glaciers store approximately 75 percent of the world's fresh water? Fourth and fifth grade students from the district’s Gifted and Talented program learned this fun fact and much more on their first GATE Day of the year! This year’s GATE topic of study is ice, and our first day of shared learning focused on Earth's cryosphere, glaciers, and climate science.
Students brainstormed about concepts such as why it is colder at higher altitudes and why there is ice at the poles, then they learned scientific answers. Many thoughtful ideas were shared throughout the day before, during, and after watching videos, reading handout materials, viewing slideshows, and conducting brief experiments.
Through one experiment, students learned that saltwater and freshwater have different freezing points. Another experiment simulated the relationship between glacier recession and sea level rise. While analyzing photographs during a partner activity, students discussed their observations of glacier change over time and hypothesized why so much glacier recession might be happening.
Toward the end of our day together, students were asked to consider how glaciers and ice change the shape of the world. They also were asked to discuss the questions what happens if all the ice melts, and what can we do to help stabilize the climate? Based on some of their questions and insights, it seems we have some future scientists in the making!
For their next scheduled GATE Day in November, students will head to the Peary-MacMillan Arctic Museum at Bowdoin College to learn about Arctic culture and traditions.

SOMETHING TO TALK ABOUT
This week our school community raised over $7,230 for the PTA fundraiser! To celebrate this milestone, Mr. Libby served lunch to all three lunch periods. We are looking forward to the Get Glowing Fun Run next Friday and are hopeful that we will celebrate the next milestone of $10,000! When that happens, Mr. Libby will spend a day working from the roof of the school! The WCS PTA funds many educational opportunities for our students including: guest speakers, author visits, field trips, AND MORE! Our school would not be the same without their efforts. We are so thankful for their hard work and for the support of the community!
The PTA, in conjunction with the WCS Library and Art department, is holding a pumpkin decorating contest! Classrooms have been hard at work decorating pumpkins like book characters, and they are on display in the main lobby. Submissions are due 10/19 and a winner will be chosen from each floor. CLICK HERE to see the entries so far!
This is the place to get all your WCS-branded clothing and accessories.
